Can anyone tell me what SHMHC stands for? I've seen it linked a few times, but youtube doesn't work well on my phone so never click through.

Great link. Love The Lord Weird Slough Feg.

The new A Forest of Stars album is one of the best of the year so far.

And thanks to whoever recommended Merkabah a few weeks ago. Perhaps more darkjazz than metal, but great stuff.

Nice Slough Feg props! Those guys tour a lot and are worth seeing.

I'm looking forward to getting the new Nachmystium this week.

Thanks for your weekly links, HighZoolander

Really? I think it's boring as all hell, but to each their own.

The new Nachtmystium, on the other hand, is ridiculously awesome.

I first learned about Slough Feg from someone's recommendation on Fark awhile back. I'm extremely grateful to whoever that person was.

Two favorites of theirs:

Vargr Theme-Confrontation (the whole Traveller album is excellent)

Climax of a Generation (crazy fast instrumental)
.

This might be old news to some of you, but I just found out about it after asking a friend what was up with the new Belphegor album. Turns out it's been delayed to 2013 because Helmuth almost died months ago. He had a really bad hangover and made the mistake of drinking from the tap in Brazil. Caught typhus and tried to battle through it and finish the tour. A week later was in intensive care and had multiple surgeries (I think) including open heart surgery. Then tons of rehab to learn things like walking all over again. He's ok now though.

Aha, thanks for the explanation all. I was waaay off in what I thought. Clicking probably would have cleared it up, but that's for suckers.

Will I be crucified if I say 'metal's just not my thing' in here? I don't mind heavy music, but most of the stuff people call metal now has more screaming than anything else. I'm a lyrics guy in the end, with good beats underneath.

There are many different flavors of metal. While there have been those here who have obnoxiously proclaimed their specific flavor to be the only "true" metal, the majority of us have at least tried to embrace the width and breadth of metal, from the early days of English metal through the most obscure Norwegian death sludge metal, and all points in between.

Personally, I'm also not a fan of harsh vocals, but I do have respect for those that can pull it off without leaving their vocal cords and parts of their bronchial tubes splattered all over the stage. :)

/ some people would pay extra for that

(Progressive) Melodic Death Metal. Take death metal, dial it back to about 7.5, add some awesome riffs from more mainstream metal, get awesome out the other side. Lyrics are still growled (usually), but they're understandable growls instead of screaming.

Insomnum- Down with the sun
Amon Amarth- Varyags of Miklagard
And possibly a bit proggy for your tastes: Belakor- Abeyance

/Interestingly, despite this being my favorite genre of metal, I don't actually like any of the 3 founding bands of Melodeath.

Mgla - With Hearts Toward None is one of my favorites of the year so far. grim modern black metal from Poland.i enjoy their extremely hooky and melodic take on the groovy, mid-paced 3rd wave sound ala Khold, Bergraven, middle-era Satyricon. etc.

and as for Slough Feg...they are awesome, but I think they've been coasting since they dropped the 'Lord Weird' from their name. Atavism was their last great album IMO.

Man, the melodies on those songs were killer and awesome. But the growling/screaming thing just kills it entirely for me. Wish there was a happy medium of skilled players and skilled vocalists.

Gratch: Adebisi: The new A Forest of Stars album is one of the best of the year so far.

It's a step in the right direction at the very least. Their last two albums had a ton of promise but most of the songs dragged on way too long or didn't really go anywhere. On this one they seem to have cut a lot of the fat and scaled the songs down to a more manageable size.

gnarlywizzard: Mgla - With Hearts Toward None is one of my favorites of the year so far.

Been on my to listen list since I first heard about it.

kroonermanblack: Man, the melodies on those songs were killer and awesome. But the growling/screaming thing just kills it entirely for me. Wish there was a happy medium of skilled players and skilled vocalists.

Forget everything else, listen to Scald, the greatest band to come out of Mother Russia.
__

So if you haven't heard, both Manilla Road and Pagan Altar will be playing the next Maryland Deathfest, which pretty much makes it The Greatest Line-Up Ever even without the other awesome bands playing.

Listen to:

Verdunkeln - Weder Licht Noch Schatten [Bass-y Black Metal]
Deviser - Unspeakable Cults [Melodic Greek Black Metal]
Mutilation Rites - Empyrean [Black Metal]
Exumer - Possessed By Fire [Poser-Killing Speed Metal]
Traitor's Gate - Devil Takes The High Road [Forgotten NWOBHM]

/Highzoolander remains awesome

We should all pay heed to DSP. We can't be having any of these things in the metal world. People can't be having a good time listening to music. What sort of precedent will that set?

If people have a good time at metal shows, people will want to share the experience with others. Sharing leads to socializing. Socializing leads to parties. Parties lead to more experimentation and more music--impure music. We can't have that.

We must staunch this...infestation at the source.

REMEMBER, TR00 METALHEADS: under no circumstance are you to have a good time. Not. Even. Once.

Someone's looking burned and died under all that sarcasm. It's almost like you want to be crushed by the sexual metal holocaust.

Try these?
Black Oath - Horcell the Temple

Black Pyramid - Mercy's Bane

Therion - Birth of Venus Illegitima

Candlemass - Bleeding Baroness

Ghost - Elizabeth

Briton Rites - Carmilla (props to SPna15 for turning me on to them)

Wolf - Black Magic

(there were a bunch more with clean singing from lots of people in last Sunday's thread too)
