I worked at one of Johnson & Wales 'practicum' facilities, an operating country inn. There I was taught a lot of strict rules about hotel operations, including a strict system for dealing with lost and found items. Under the rules:
- All items that are not *clearly* trash or discard items (including perishables) are saved, even if thought worthless.
- The cleaner who finds the items puts it into a bag with the date, room number, and their own name.
- The item is logged with the above information, plus a brief description.
- The item is retained for six months. We *do not* contact the guest about the item, for privacy reasons.
- If the item remains unclaimed after six months, it is offered to the person who found it. If they decline, it then goes into a general pool for anyone on the room cleaning staff to claim. After that, general staff are allowed to claim items declined by the cleaning staff. Management staff are not allowed to claim items until and unless every non-management worker (rooms staff only -- not banquets, sales, etc.) has declined.

When I later worked for a crappy hotel chain in the Boston area, I found their L&F policy vague and inadequate, so I applied the J&W policy. Cleaners were at first reluctant to save items they thought worthless, but adapted to the new stricter policy. One item that was saved was a cheap-looking ring. No one thought it had any value or would be claimed, but the policy said to save it anyway, and it was. It turned out to have substantial sentimental value to whomever accidentally left it behind. The cleaner received a substantial cash reward from the guest.

If it costs you nothing personally to do the right thing, just do it. Never mind the reward, since there usually isn't any. Just knowing that you did the right thing should be enough. But sometimes, there is a material reward anyway, and you should accept that gracefully.

I don't know, that was slightly heart warming. Most taxi cabs I deal with taking me to the airport in chicago don't give a crap (or hardly speak english, or know what 2am pickup means "Is that night, or next morning?"). I forget stuff, it's gone. I forget to get a receipt for work purposes, call them up, "Oh sure, no problem, I mail".. Never get a receipt, so I'm out cab fare.

I wouldn't, and I actually don't think most people would.

I lose my wallet pretty frequently, at least once a year (I have a terrible memory for stuff like that). I'd estimate I've lost it at least 15 times in my adult life. On all but two occasions I've got it back with all the money inside and I usually have at least a couple hundred bucks in my wallet.

Most people are decent. The only people who think differently tend to be the sort of people who want to believe that everyone is as rotten as them.

I lost my wallet in an arcade back in 85,. Just cashed my check..pretty much all the money I had at the time. Went back to the arcade after I had realized I left it on the change machine about an hour later. Went to the guy running the arcade and asked him if he had found a wallet. He said no. After much lamenting and explaining that was all the money I had, he reluctanly produced the wallet with the cash in it from under the counter. I gave him 20 bucks as a reward and decided not to come over the counter at him for trying to steal all I had. I was a dumb kid at the time and stoned. Flash back to approx. a year earlier. I found a wallet with 5000.00 in cash and a cashiers check for an additional 4500.00 in a bathroom at a grocery store. I looked the owner up through his drivers lisc, and returned the money in full. Barely got a thank you, but I did get my wallet back a year later. I have believed in Karma ever since. Do the right thing has always been my motto ever since.
