It's a media-generated "controversy" that no one would have picked up on without being told to notice it, and it happens to be extremely sexist, as well. Bravo, modern journalism. |
||
| DubyaHater
Well, this is a refreshing change from biatching about NBC or theorizing that the Chinese cheat in every event. |
||
| skinink FFS, can everyone let this girl enjoy her success without generating controversy? This includes FoxNews and their token commentator who was remarking about Gabby's and other's uniforms not being patriotic enough. |

...I don't even understand. What's wrong with her hair?? |
||
| Kthulu
We get it already...she's black. |

Janusdog: ...I don't even understand. What's wrong with her hair?? Some 22-year-old chick from Detroit told the Daily Beast that Gabby needed gel and a hairbrush. From there, it turned into "OMG everybody hates Gabby's hair!" |

And thank goodness we used a Hero tag on this issue, because we all know responding to controversy is always heroic. |

I like her attitude, good for her. She's only 16 and light years ahead of the adults commenting on her hair. |

Nappy? |
||
| xanadian God, I weep for this country. We all come across to the international community as a bunch of rubes. |

Her hairstyle is as much of a sport as what she's getting Olympic medals for. |

Hero tag for this? |

Are these same people complaining about the white gymnasts who are all wearing the same pulled back ponytail? |
||
| Dancin_In_Anson "Nothing is going to change," she said. "I'm going to wear my hair like this during beam and bar finals. You might as well just stop talking about it." Good on you kid. Go out there, kick ass and take no prisoners. |

The only people who care about this story all work for news organizations. |
||
| FabulousFreep
They seriously need to STFU and let her do her thing. I'm sure this hair BS is not what she needs right now, rather support her and keep your pathetic biatchiness to yourself. |
||

I didnt even know this was a thing. Now I am angry is is a thing. Who is behind this thing and can we slap the shiat out of them? |

Kthulu: We get it already...she's black. Blah-American. And come on, it's a few silly people criticizing her hair. It's not like the nation's largest news organization is questioning her patriotism. |
||
| Wolfmanjames Until I started dating a black woman, I never knew how weirdly complex their attitude towards their hair is. Add to that the normal cattiness and this tempest in a teacup should not surprise. /As a writer on another forum said, Gabby's critics have diabetes and hypertension, but their hair is on point. |

Have you seen the Chris Rock documentary "Good Hair?" Blew my mind. I seriously had no idea about any of that. I remember coming home from picking up dinner and my wife was watching it. I said "you're watching a movie about hair? WTF?" By the end, I was just riveted. |

xanadian: God, I weep for this country. We all come across to the international community as a bunch of rubes. Don't be so hard on yourselves. The international community don't know about this unless they read Fark. So that means I am the international community that you are coming across... I would only be too concerned if every thread on a subject like this wasn't full of people expressing their displeasure, it reminds me that you are all human after all. Saving you for one more day. |

I was reading this headline while overhearing a converstaion between two black women in my office discussing her hair. Seriously, WTF? "She should have cut it short so she wouldn't need to pull it back like that, it just looks bad!" No,neither of them could compete in ANY athletic endevour, unless you count walking to the fridge as a sport. |

||
| gilgigamesh In a related story, many people sitting on their couches who have done nothing with their lives are jealous, petty assholes who react to a young girl's triumph by trying to tear her down. |

what_now: If this picture doesn't make you smile, you are either a) a farking racist or b) Viktoria Komanava. Are you sure there are no other options? For instance, that you possibly don't care about her particular sport or anything as mundane as that? |

Yeah until I started working with 3 of the cattiess black women I never knew about the hair thing either. I would sit there and listen to what they would do to their hair the hours spent on it, the amount of money and was just sitting there with a WTF look on my face. The only thing I could compare it to is a guy that builds a car from scratch and will spend the rent money on it to fix it up. And even then its not close |

Someone who busted her ass her entire life to achieve greatness has now achieved it and her face is lit up as bright as can be. How can your heart not warm a bit at that? |

SacriliciousBeerSwiller: Adorable kid with great personality wins the most important award in her sport (and beats some competitors with seemingly lesser human traits) . "QUICK, EVERYONE TEAR HER DOWN!!!" Normally I would agree. But in this instance what I'm seeing is a sub 1% minority who have any problem with her hair and even those comments are by supporters who are talking about her hair from a place of misguided concern. rarely does one see such nearly unanimous support for someone in the US media machine. |

The funniest moment in the Olympics was last night when the other-than-oberman-gymnastics commentator spewed ten minutes that the US girl should win the vault gold before she even competed because "she's clearly by far the best in the world." Must have said it five times. Then to his great dismay the Rumanian wins. But the jerk still calls the American the best in the world. Hey, jerkass, the Rumanian won the farking gold metal. She's the best in the world. (And, by the way, nancy-boy, the Rumanian blonde is far hotter than the team 'merica chick.": And the UK with 65 million people has on half the metals of the US 305 mil. and China 1.2 bil. Great Britain is clearly the Olympic winner, with its former slave colony Jamaica getting honorable mention. |

Hogbreath: Must have said it five times. Then to his great dismay the Rumanian wins. But the jerk still calls the American the best in the world. Hey, jerkass, the Rumanian won the farking gold metal. She's the best in the world. No, not really. She performed the best at this competition though. No other vaulter could have won a medal by landing on their ass. The amrerican chick has been rather universally regarded as the best for a while but she had a bad vault and lost this competition. It happens. Bolt could have lost the 100m and not lost his standing as fastest dude. One competition is just one competition. |
