BAZ Luhrmann's much-anticipated movie "The Great Gatsby" will not be released this Christmas.

Anticipated by whom? Did I slip into a parallel universe or something? This sounds like the plot to an episode of Entourage.

Bummer. I was hoping to watch it on Xmas this year back-to-back w/Django Unchained. Kinda breaks up my Leopalooza, but I'm sure I'll survive.

The book was boring as f*ck. Even a perfect adaptation of the book would be an endurance test to watch... and 3D? Really?

It more represents when people generally have free time and there aren't many competing avenues for their attention. During summer the kids are running about with nothing to do. Fall you lose a lot of families to weekend sports, both those of their children and those on TV. Christmas leaves a lot of non-Christians without anything to do, and a good percentage of people celebrating have a tradition of an afternoon movie.

It's not that the average moviegoer won't see something they want to if it's not released perfectly on their day off, but there are factors that work against a successful movie release, depending on when it premieres. There are always outliers though. I believe Titanic racked up its billion because it released in the winter and had no competition.

Somehow, Luhrman managed to make the movie version of The Great Gatsby even less appealing than the book.

The 1974 version, from what little I remember, was pretty true to the text, indicating that maybe the text wouldn't actually make a very good film. Redford was a crushing bore in it. He didn't look even remotely interested in it. Been a while, though. Maybe it was better than I remember.

I did like the book a lot better the second time 'round, when I didn't have a vulture of a professor perched on my shoulder expecting a tidy little thesis about it. God that guy was a twit. By the time he got done with me, I hated everything there was to hate about 20th century American literature.

Alan Ladd played Gatsby in 1949. Haven't seen it, but according to Time Out Film Guide, he was "so much more convincing as a man with a dark and mysterious past than one-dimensional glamour puss Robert Redford." Time Out also describes the earlier film as "less a 20's costume drama than a 40's film noir. Could be worth checking out.

Those adjectives pretty much describe all of Luhrman's work to date. I will still watch it for Carey Mulligan, and to gripe about or be pleasantly surprised by what they've done to Fitzgerald's story. But I will watch it in 2-D (my guess is that the studio delayed the film because it knows that 3-D has gone from Saviour of Cinema to Box-Office Poison in record time).

TFA: But mid-2013 is not exactly a cinematic desert, with titles including sequels to "Iron Man", "Star Trek", "Monsters Inc", "300", another "Superman" reboot and Gore Verbinski's "Lone Ranger".

On the contrary, I think that's a nearly perfect description of a cinematic desert right there!

Finally, a pet peeve: Other big movies appearing towards the end of the year include Peter Jackson's first "The Hobbit" film...

Every college freshman knows that you omit definite articles from titles of works whenever not doing so will result in an ungrammatical sentence. It should read, "Peter Jackson's first Hobbit film"--after all, you don't read a The New York Times editorial, do you?

It always upset me they were releasing a movie set entirely in the summertime 4 days after winter began. I'm glad they moved it.

I have read Gatsby twice, and still don't understand its legendary standing. Not hatin', just sayin'.

So how long do I have to wait to not go see this?

I was one of those "3D? WTF?" people too. Then I saw the trailer. I sat there just immersed in this hugely saturated richness that seemed to make me feel that real life could never look that awesome. The way Carey Mulligan was framed entirely by those hydrangeas for instance blew my mind. Also, not afraid to admit, but I like Luhrmann. Yeah, he could've toned it down in the first half of Moulin Rouge to ease the suffering of the epileptics (but you can argue that it was intentional by the story telling theme/framing) but man I don't think I've ever left a theater after having watched one of his movies without liking aspects of it if not the entirety of it. I think if there was any director who could put a new lens on this tired work of fiction it would have been him. And keep in mind, I actually like The Great Gatsby, however I didn't like the Redford movie. It was like a bunch of actors got together and just did a dramatic table reading. The book is about the corruption of money and the excesses that come with it. The trailer for the new one, I think, blew those themes out of the water.

With Les and this movie, it would have its hat handed to it on Christmas - only 4 more months til:
