Not gonna jump off the bridge over this yet. At this point, most of the speculation about it being a serious injury stems from his seeing a specialist, even though the specialist in question is the doctor he's been seeing regularly since high school. Hopefully we'll know more tonight.

I'm looking at the positives right now. This problem, as minor as it is, was going to present itself at some point, so better it be now than a month or two from now when the games actually count. Plus, we've still got Montario Hardesty, who was a high second round pick a couple years back, who's now going to get a chance to work with the first team in the preseason and prove whether or not he can still be a serviceable back and take some of the load off of Richardson this season.

Why did the NFL cause the people of Cleveland to continue suffering by giving them a new Browns team anyway?

/cruel and unusual punishment

Not that he was high on my list, but he just fell way down on my fantasy draft board.

Still intend to target Foster or McCoy in the first if at all possible.
Or maybe just go the QB route and take Brady, Brees, or Rogers

They've already announced that he'll have a minor arthroscopic surgery tomorrow to remove a fragment of loose cartilage and that he should be ready to go by opening day.

still. guy's had how many knee surgeries now, before he's ever played a down in the pros?
At least two?
I'd be at least concerned.

I'm concerned, but I'm not gonna start doomsaying like some of the fans around here are doing. Ever since yesterday it's been, "Oooooh, it's another Montario Hardesty/William Green/Tim Couch/Courtney Brown, we're done, it's over, back up the truck".

I think it's a better lesson in why a franchise should avoid taking a player at such a fungible position with such a high pick.

Hardesty and Brown were the injury guys. Green was fine until he got in personal trouble. Warren has habitually underperformed everywhere he's gone. I still think Couch did far better than anyone gives him credit for, for someone who got pounded into the turf week in and week out. Winslow had the injury bug bite hard, then he got the swell head. Kam Wimbley was decent, and probably better than any linebacker on the team now that isn't injured or suspended, except for DQ, and we traded him for what turned out to be Colt McCoy.

Couch was far better than he's given credit for, especially considering that he performed on the level that he did while spending most of his four years running for his life from defensive linemen with a broken hand and a bum shoulder.

I wouldn't say Richardson's missing 2-4 weeks of the preseason is a lesson on anything yet. When his knees start costing him actual meaningful playing time, then we can play the "I told you so" game.

You know, when Dr. Andrews retires to his own private island with blackjack and hookers, who the heck is going to treat all these injuries? I mean the return time in the NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL/WWE is going to skyrocket without him around. He's the legal version of a one-man steroids era when it comes to athlete recoveries

Cleveland might be the most shiat-on sports town in the US. MeBron. The Indians. Even learning that Richardson is made of balsa wood and chewing gum isn't as bad as realizing that Holmgren is determined to keep the Browns irrelevant the rest of this decade.

/As shiat-on as Seattle is, they no longer have enough teams to perpetually disappoint them.
//And as shiat-on as Detroit is in general, the Lions are on an upswing, and someday we'll make Robocop a reality for you guys.

I need to find an AFC team to root for. I'm a 49ers fan in the NFC and want to root for an AFC team too, so I can have two teams to follow like a maniac.

There are some stipulations, they can't be a team I will be bandwagon-ing on. They have to be pretty bad for a long time, or really bad for a long time. Have to have a good die hard fan base. So I'm down to the Browns or the Bills.

Why should I be a browns fan? I like Greg Little, this Richardson guy seems good, that Weedon guy seems like a good story for how old he is, of course Cribbs is a beast.

The main criteria I have is whether or not the teams fanbase, as a whole, frowns upon new people joining that fan base.

As long as you're in it for the long haul, we in Believeland would be glad to have another fan on board. I say "in it for the long haul" because, being Pittsburgh adjacent, we deal with a lot of goddamned frontrunners and it's kind of a collective pet peeve.

Hell yeah I'm in it for the long haul. I'm a 49ers fan, but i was 8 when they won their last superbowl, and most of my NFL watching came from 2004-present, when the team was garbage. I couldn't watch their games online most of that time because the technology for that was shiatty, so I would listen to the games on KNBR. I listened to the last game of their 5-11 season against the Browns, when farking Chris Wienke was signed off the streets to start for them at QB. I'm in.

Browns it is.

Lol, I have officially placed the Browns as my most sorry-for franchise. I have no beef with you folks. And as a Saints fan who spent most of his life in abject misery, I get it. I do.

But now that the Lions are earning cred, and that I agree that Robocop can now be a reality, Cleveland folks have taken my #1 root-for-unless-it-directly-affects-me position. It's the same way I cheer for arthritic dogs trying to hop on sofas. Goddamn you Clevelanders have earned a break from bullsh*t, especially with the heart I've seen you guys play with in fairly recent years, only to encounter the Cleveland Browniest of moments when it counted most.

I was at a game against the Jets two years ago. Down 20-13, 2 minutes left in the game. McCoy gets the ball and drives 'em 80 yards to tie the game with seconds left on the clock.

Browns get the ball in overtime. Immediately, they're driving again. McCoy gets the ball to Chauncey Stuckey. He breaks free, cuts up the sideline inside the Jets 35, Phil Dawson's field goal range is only a good Peyton Hillis carry away...and Stuckey fumbles the ball away before he can get out of bounds. The Jets would win that game on a walk-off 26 yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes and we had to walk all the way back to the car getting sh*t on by the most obnoxious fanbase in professional sports.

That is, like, the 40th most painful thing I've had to sit through since I started following Cleveland sports when I was 7.

What type of feeling do you have about the new owner? Was the old owner terrible? With Haden getting suspended and Richardsons knee surgery coming up I know its just more depression, but was the old owner really bad?

What about Holmgren? From his time in the NFC West (and when working for the 49ers before that) I know he is a good coach, but how has he done as overseeing player personell? I actually like McCoy.

* I like the new owner for the most part. He seems to actually have a passion and a desire to own an NFL football team, as opposed to Lerner who only owned the team for the past ten years because it was part of the terms of his inheriting the team from his dad, Al, that he maintain ownership for ten years after his death. Randy was a pitiful owner who cared more about his English soccer club than he did the Browns, and it showed. My only wariness about the new owner is that he seems to be pretty indifferent about the issue of possibly changing the team's uniforms around, which is something that I hope he'll realize would be a bad move after spending some time here.

* The Holmgren/Heckert drafts have been pretty good for the most part. Of the 26 starters this season (including Special Teams) 19 will be players drafted by Holmgren & Heckert.

* We all like McCoy, he's extremely likable. Problem is that he just doesn't have the ability to take over a game that an NFL Quarterback in today's game has to have.

Wow, I didn't know about the conditions of the will. So this year is the 10th year then? Everyone expected this was coming? I heard the new owner is saying he will keep the team in Cleveland, and thats smart, because moving the team to LA would be a financial disaster. Cleveland at the very least has a dedicated fan base from way back to the time the NFL was just starting, and LA is notorious for not giving a shiat about the NFL.

A lot of times good drafting will get you fired if the coach is shiat. I know it's just his second year, but how is Shurmer doing as the HC? The 49ers team that won last year was built by Mike Nolan/Singletary and Scott McCloughan (the old 49ers GM), and it seems like Jim Harbaugh was the piece to put it all together.

As a hardcore fan, I could see the difference right away, and the 49ers were lucky they had such a strong team for a new coach. Shurmer seemed like a smart offensive mind, are you optomistic for his second year? It's really tough to compete with teams with great DC's like the Steelers and the Bengals, but iron sharpens iron. The NFC West actually has some awesome defenses, one of the main reasons I want to root for the Browns. Eventually each team in the division will have a shiat kicking D.

* This was the 10th year, but nobody really saw it coming because most of us weren't aware of that agreement until news of the sale started to come out. And yes, Haslam has already stated that he will not be moving the team.

* Shurmur, to put it nicely, sucked last year, but the fact that he was a rookie coach running a new system without an offensive coordinator and without the benefit of an offseason to get his team ready definitely contributed to that. This year, Brad Childress has been brought in as the offensive coordinator and that, along with a full offseason, players who've played in the system before and a year of experience under his belt, should make Shurmur's second year a lot more bearable.

It's undo-able to have your head coach be the OC or DC. And Childress, for how bad he sucks as a HC is a good OC. I wasn't aware he was the Browns OC this year, that bodes well for them.

My favorite part about your explanations is the tempering of optimism. "A lot more bearable".

Not every rookie head coach can walk into a goldmine like an extremely talented and disciplined roster that Nolan/Singletary/McCloughan set up for the 49ers or that Rex Ryan walked into with the Jets. From what I have heard of the young skill players the Browns just need that extra push. They are in the best division in football though, but their time will come.

I'm all in here, thanks for helping me learn more.

I'd just like to point out that you are voluntarily becoming a Cleveland Browns fan. This is an extremely high risk position to take. I've got nearly 40 years under my belt and it takes pieces of your soul.

Also know that we our currently 1/25th of the way towards our plan to contend in 2037. So depending on your age, you may want to rethink this. Tho, we are very optimistic everything is going according to this plan.

/Actually Serious. It's SOUL crushing to be a Browns fan. Fair warning.

//If we could ever win the damn thing, the streets of Cleveland will look like "Caligula." While on fire.

That is what I am after. I want to root for a team that is an underdog. I want to root for a team and watch every single game they play, read all their local beat writers reports about that game all week long, and watch the NFL shiat on them. I want to be a part of that, because when they do end up winning the big game, it will feel really good too be a fan of that team.

I know I won't ever come close to the dedication that you have for the team, the years you have already put in. The years your parents and grandparents have put in to this team. I know that. I want in now though, and I want to root when its hopeless, and one day, we can all cheer together when they finally make it.

The NFL is a great league, and football is an amazing game. I want to root for teams that I like, and I want them to do well, and I want to pay attention when they do really bad. I have been a 49ers fan since I can remember, so I can't root for any NFC team, but I want to pick an AFC team that I will root for just as hard, and that I know isn't a lock for the superbowl every year.

So he gets drafted in April and it takes the Browns until August to send him to get it checked out?
