I felt the same way while reading it. It's shiat like this that makes me wish there really is some sort of afterlife or reincarnation instead of what I feel is closer to the truth that this man has squandered the one shot he had at life.

And for those mocking his appearance. You'll be lucky to even live that long, let alone still be mowing $300 in grass a month. Because he probably lives in a poorer neighborhood I'm kinda doubting he gets $75 a yard. Probably more like $15-$20.

What does being disabled have to do with it? Even if they guy only had one arm he could still drive a riding lawnmower. He's doing what he can to get by because he has no other choice. But it's easy to judge while sitting back in your cushioned chair in a nice air conditioned room.

No, I don't. If a person does manual labor and with that PLUS their disability check they're still only making $759 a month...I'd say that person is certainly at a disadvantage in life, for what ever the reason (depression, injury, whatever).

But let's say he mows just 3 yards a day at only $20 a yard. That's 60 a day. 300 a week. Around 1200 a month. It's pretty easy to mow 3 in a day (if they were big yards you'd be charging a lot more)

It is a sad story and I feel bad for this dude, whether it's all his own fault or not.

That being said wtf is up with $300/month. Isn't $30 a lawn a pretty lowball price? I don't pay someone myself but, hell, I had $30 lawns when I was a kid. So if you only did 1 lawn per workday, giving you approximately a 2 hour workday including travel time, you would be making $600/month. Or if you were willing to suffer through a four hour workday before getting your drink on you'd have $1,200/month. Methinks drinking is not his only problem.

SSDI was always a form of social welfare, and never should have ever been considered anything else, as that is its express purpose. The question is why you feel that deep depression, extremely disadvantaged life position, and life-long alcoholism don't qualify as a disability. What does then qualify? Just loss of limb or one of the major senses? What if someone is a manual laborer and has a partial stroke, but is still mobile, has their senses, and simply can't do they manual labor position they are used to doing? Is $759/month really that high-rolling, in your opinion? Who is it of which you think he's taking advantage?

This guy's depression issues aside, why the hell can't we have some police that use independent thought and discretion? Look, I understand what he did was technically illegal, but instead of arresting and compounding the problems of a guy who isn't (much of) a threat to anyone and anything while cruising along at 3 mph on a farking lawnmover, why couldn't they just give him a ride home and pull the distributor cap off his lawnmower or something so that he couldn't drive it again until he was sober enough to fix it....?

I forgot. Police aren't here to "serve and protect" anymore, they're here to "restrain and subdue". Mission accomplished.

At the very least- they can watch the poor guy and make sure he doesn't poison himself. dropping off a serious alcholic in the middle of a serious slip isn't really doing him a favor. He's not going to go home and sleep it off.

yeah, this is a bummer thread. his brain is pickled, he's old, living in poverty and basically dove head fist into a slip because there is virtually no chance for him to have any sort of better life. I might give up too if all that was in my future is catfood and a dirty little apartment.

It's not the same thing, but my friend who is in a wheechair permanently is on SSI, and is also going to school for some sort of biochem degree (she's a lot smarter than me, I don't really understand what she's studying). So she's on public assistance and has been pretty much her whole life because she's been a para since a baby, but when she does graduate... man, she's going to make some good money. She works as a research assistant now during the summer.
