Taiwan's coverage rocks. Here we have 16 channels (16!!!) on basic cable covering the Olympics, half in English, half in Mandarin. And since Taiwan competes in virtually nothing (other than Taekwondo) there has been coverage of everything from handball to water polo.

The coverage had better be good considering how the Olympics has so strongly messed up Doctor Who! (Hey, I like the Olympics, but I have my priorities!)

The unashamedly partisan focus on home athletes (possibly due to them not being used to having much in the way of British success) is my only quibble, really. Aside from that, you cannot argue with the fact that the BBC makes it possible to watch every single event live, and most of their commentators and pundits actually know what the fark they're talking about.

I'll stick my neck out here, but I've loved the NBC.com/LiveExtra service. Free with signup, and yes, there's commercials, but I don't care about that (they come back from the break exactly where they left off). Every sport is streamed, either live or archived, and most of them have no mind-numbing announcers.

How else can you absolutely positively ensure the match will end EXACTLY in time for a 37 second poignant interview in which one of the contestants remarks on how she misses her cats while she's at the Olympics, and still cut exactly to a pre-taped track event, which they will cut away from in the middle to interview a contestant on how her mother is sad that people don't love America more?

NBC's Olympic coverage is pretty good. NBC Olympic primetime is just like the rest of NBC primetime - an overedited mess. But if you can read this sentence, you're not the intended audience. No Line For Beer: Primetime coverage is targeted towards middle age housewives who aren't going to watch sports unless there's (a) a sappy emotional story, (b) Americans, and (c) a good shot of a medal win.

Not middle-aged housewives, just Americans. If we have, say, 2-3 hours of TV to watch in a night, we want some payout for those 2-3 hours, not to see some random competition of a bunch of people we don't know playing a sport we don't give a sh*t about. The vast majority of people complaining about the coverage have more interest in complaining about the coverage than they do they actual events they're "missing."

I've found that Ireland's coverage of the Olympics has been spot on.

That's what i was going to say, the BBC Olympics site is showing every single sport live, they may not have commentary on them, but they have live streams of everything. AIso also all being transmitted on digital TV. The BBC coverage is second to none, worth the license fee just for that.

And not just online... if you have a satellite platform, you get a dedicated channel for every sport. Been watching freestyle wrestling, dressage, boxing and Tae Kwon Do today.

It's not on BBC.co.uk and it definitely doesn't have "all sports" because it's a single stream from a single source and as far as I can tell, I can't inhabit up to ten realities at once to see them all simultaneously. The last time I looked at it, it was nothing but interviews. Sorry, don't need to hear Tim "Never Won A Major" Henman natter on about the tennis competition.

I've been watching full events on the BBC web site during the day for sports I'm particularly interested in and the NBC show in the evening for a wrap-up, but I can barely stand the NBC show. This business of showing every U.S. athlete's parents like "oh wow!! she has PARENTS!!! and they're ROOTING for HER!!! That's just so AWESOME!!!!" I read that there was a dedicated camera on Michael Phelp's mom.

Tonight I realized why a US athlete won the decathalon, there were apparently only two competitors, both American. I know the shot put is not that exciting, but at least try to give a sense of the event instead of just showing the two Americans.

Is this going to commercial or coming back during play supposed to make us think they're live?

Watching gymnastics on the BBC, I realized that it's not even what's being said. The BBC announcers were saying things like "that was a great routine" and "she really has to nail this" and "awww, she didn't quite hit the handstand" but they say it in a normal speaking voice. The NBC announcers try to have this super emotional tone, overemphasizing every third word, and it sounds ridiculous.

The BBC had sprinting legend Michael Johnson speaking intelligently about running and adding real insight. NBC has Ryan Seacreast doing "what's it like to be so awesome?" interviews instead of showing actual competition.

I wanted to post this article I read during the Beijing games but couldn't find it. A reporter took her daughter and mom with her. They were watching some Olympic coverage in the hotel and her mother was upset that they were just showing the events without the heartwarming overcame tragedy stories. She didn't know who to root for.

On my old sound system I could and often would set the output to the rear speakers only. Most stations broadcast the commentary through the front speakers only.
