Oh, and in case anyone things my analogy doesn't work, I was actually really close. The average cost of a new car in 1959 was about $2200. Adjust for inflation to 2010 dollars and that's just shy of $20,000 which isn't that far off.

Better quality isn't free. Of course you're going to get a comparatively better product just because of the overall advancement of processes across an industry. Even these cheap little crapboxes are almost certainly substantially safer and better built than most any car from the 50s.

But you don't get better products for free just because time went buy. More and better stuff means more money. It costs money to engineer modern cage designs and crumple zones, perform stability programming, develop tires that are reliable and responsive, better brakes and do it all within the confines imposed by modern efficiency and emissions standards while maintaining the performance demanded by buyers.

Too many people demand all the features of a product at a cut-rate price. Well, guess what? That means cuts have to be made in the cost and that means using inferior materials, inferior engineers and inferior testing processes.

If consumers insist on comparing nothing but price tags, they'll get exactly what they pay for.

As others have said, you get what you pay for. You can build a 2500 dollar car, but unless you like dying in a fender-bender with a moped, it's not a very smart buy. I doubt the average Chinese SUV could stand up to a Smart, let alone an F-150.

Cars today Are built to make up for stupid people.
We don't need airbags, or crumple zones. We need people to pay freaking attention when they are driving, not texting.

Thicker metal and actual bumpers are safety, at what speed are a majority of accidents? Under 10 mph. That heavy as hell bumper would even be dented. That person in the crosswalk or biker, you yield to the car they are bigger.
Vehicle Designers and engineers that design this crap should be made to spend a year with the car, then they'll see that having to take a vendor off to service a battery is just bat crap crazy.
