Great news. I love my Android Touchpad and look forward to getting new HP hardware at vastly discounted prices when they kill it once more.

Will they be in business long enough to get them on the market?

I've got an HP desktop at home I'm happy with. Lasted 2 years so far. It was severely underpowered when I bought it with just a lame 250W power supply, but I took care of that.

The TouchPad however, was a friggin joke. "Hey, let's stop making these damn things since we'll never compete with Apple and cut our current TouchPad customers off at the knees! Even better, let's dump our inventory on our retailers and announce a 2/3 price cut and let them deal with the unreasonable demand!"

Hey if I can grab one at $99 and stick Android on it, I'm down.

I'll wait for the gel-caps, thank you.

Worst software (SAP) on the planet, and they hire him to run HP. His driving agenda was to get HP out of the hardware business, even to the point of throwing a $1.3 billion investment in Palm away, just to feed his ego. It was crossing the line to dump the PC business that got him fired.

I have a relative who worked for HP from 1976 until he retired in 2005. He's now even dead yet and he's been spinning in his grave. In his opinion now though , "Things are looking up for HP"

I don't get all the "I love putting android on my touchpad" people. For a bit more, you could just get a Nook and root it. I have a touchpad, and other than taking out all the stupid error checking and logging crap that slows it down, I've left it alone. WebOS golden showers Android, rainbow showers iOS, and cleveland steams Windows Phone/8/metro. Frankly I don't give a shiat about most "apps". It has Kindle, Email, access to the internet, can open docs, do Kayak, etc etc. it has a few games my kid plays like Slice It and Angry Birds. No way would I make it as crappy as my phone just so i could install.... ummm.....???? Shazam? Instagram? Really?

But back to the topic at hand, HP is farking stupidly managed, yes.

I dual boot my touchpad and while I like webos, I have never had a problem with android on it, the only thing that doesnt work for me in android is the camera, but the gazillion apps on the android market do. You could even get more games for your kids.

And it runs very quickly with android.

The Touchpad wasn't a bad idea, but HP tried to create their own iPad, which they couldn't do. The iPad relies on the BRAND to get away with not having a memory slot, or a proper USB port. Apple fans are willing to spend twice as much for the same amount of hardware as a competitor.

Worst, Leo set a goal to sell the Touchpad as well as the iPad sold. Terribly unrealistic, and on purpose. He inherited the Touchpad when he came on board (rushed onboard, as Mark Hurd's indiscretions forced him out of the chair), and wanted desperately to torpedo it (as well as the PC division).

If it had been designed better (screw the multi-SKU to milk $$$ out of customers for minor flash memory upgrades), and coupled with a cellular provider (they did, in fact, have a 3G 64GB version slated to come out) to subsidize it (like the iPad and Zoom tablets), they might have done more respectable (still short of Leo the idiot's targets) numbers.

That was before I joined the company, when they acquired EDS (which was actually a good move for both companies). It would be nice if they could refocus and bring up the quality of the hardware end of the market, though.

I bought a $99 Touchpad.

Gave it to my mom as a Christmas present. Just to use as a coffee-table web browser/email/Kindle/photo viewer/Skype machine.

It's perfect for her. She doesn't even care about the relative lack of apps or what OS it runs. As long as it does those things pretty well.

They last too long. I know people who still have LaserJet 4's in daily service. These new pieces of shiat break down at the drop of a hat. At this point, there isn't a single consumer grade product from HP I'd ever consider buying. And I'm not too happy with their commercial grade printers anymore.

When the original iPad came out, Apple actually had the best price for that hardware. Nobody could match the specs at $499 at the time.

The Touchpad was a nice little tablet -- the problem was, it was tied to an OS that, whatever its merits, had no place in the current market. If HP comes out with something that runs Android (or perhaps Windows RT, but I don't have a lot of hope for that), they might come up with something decent

This. The CM9 nightlies are really great, everything works except the camera and they're fairly stable.

I don't know about the Touchpad, but my Toshiba Thrive was about a million times better than the iPad, and I paid for the first and got the iPad for free. It does everything and anything I want without Mac's restrictive, annoying policies getting in the way.

The only thing it could do more is have better photo editing software on it, but you can only expect so much from what is really a portable device.

The wife just bought an ASUS Transformer Infinity. I don't think HP has it in them to make something this nice. Tegra 3 is kinda showing its age though. Runs Death Rally well enough, considering the up-scaled resolution, but it's still just not...quite...there.

Oh well. Should be fun to watch the parade of fail as HP flails about again.

Google it-- It's very simple. I'm not a tech guy and I had no trouble.

There are a couple of YouTube videos that walk you through it. Like this one for example.

Here's the instructions I followed. Just don't follow the link to the "latest version", since that'll get you the latest version of CM7 (which is not what you want). Instead, get the latest nightly of CM9 from here.

Don't be put off by the fact that it's a nightly; it's very stable and runs very well.

Is the microphone working on yours? When I installed CM9, the microphone wouldn't work.

My Touchpad reads me a bedtime story every night. I'm currently running through the unabridged audiobook of The Stand. I haven't yet Android-ized it, but I'll get around to that one of these days.

My opinion of how HP could be successful with a tablet...
1.) put a frackin' SD card slot and a proper USB port on it.
2.) default WebOS (with the craptastic logging turned off), but with an optional Android install on an SD card.
3.) Keep the price under $300 (the 16g model sold well on ebay for around $250, which was where I got mine)

Who knows if they can actually do this, of course...

My OfficeJet 8500 is an awesome printer that is almost as cheap as a laser to run (a $36 black cart does around 2000 pages). If you spend a few bucks more and get one of their business line they are great machines. Cheap out and get the consumer grade models, not so much.

This is great news. If HP develops android drivers for their camera my Touchpad will finally be complete.

I use my Touchpad for browsing the net on my lunch breaks. It's portable and it does the job, though it seems to stutter a bit when playing flash videos.

CM 10 should be fun to toy with.

So once upon a time, two years ago, HP bought Palm, at the time, the owners of the most fluid and intuitive mobile UI. HP promptly demolishes Palm, and spins down the WebOS division, many of the key players of which are quickly snapped up by Google (Thank you for Jelly Bean!). HP then recruits talent from...Nokia(!?). Now they are launching a new tablet based on this.
