Well the WAC is basically dead, so why not? They won't gain any ground, but they won't be much worse off either.

This offseason, and especially all the farking reconferencing, has drained me severely of my interest in college football. I only hope in two weeks I'll be better.

The entire WAC decided it is better to be somewhere other than the WAC. UT San Antonio, which is playing its first season in Division 1-A (or FBS, or whatever we're calling it now), decided to leave the WAC for C-USA.

When a football program that didn't exist in 2010 thinks your conference is a dead end...

This. The WAC decided not to exist anymore and Idaho doesn't have anywhere to go.

And, subby, it's "than" not "then."

Maybe that's their next two moves: independent, then back in the WAC.

Didn't Hawaii drop out of that conference too?

I wouldn't go back either.

Just for football... they jumped to the Big West for all other sports. It's a smart move financially since all the other schools are in California so they don't have to budget as many ridiculous in-conference road trips (Texas, Louisiana, Idaho etc).

Idaho has no choice...other than hope the Mtn West takes them.

Idaho will be playing a lot of road games as an Indy. Their dome stadium seats only 16K and it is tough to travel to Moscow, ID. Even worse, they are 5 mi from Washington State...so they share the area with them for fans and support

Interesting. Either this story was briefly on the main page and then moved, or I accidentally clicked on the Sports tab :-)

Either way, heap on the scorn. I deserve it.

I for one welcome our independent football overlords. FYI the Moscow-Pullman airport is expanding to allow for bigger aircraft and therefor more people to come.

This move makes perfect sense. Instead of paying to send their football team to other WAC schools for their away games, they can get paid the $1+ million to go to Alabama, USC, LSU, Ohio State, etc. If they play an extra away game or two, they should be able to bring in a $10 million a year.

Not bad for a rinky dink school.

They'll make more money as a cupcake-for-hire than they would have made as a conference member. They do have to play 5 home games at the Kibbie Dome or be forced to drop to FCS level, but could take care of that by playing "home" games at other schools.

I'm curious as to why the MWC has decided that NMSU and Idaho are too stinky for them. They're sitting at 10 members (1 of which is football-only), 12 gets you a conference game and all the extra revenue/attention that provides. NMSU would be an instant rival for UNM. Does the MWC expect that it'll just be able to nitpick some better CUSA schools if they really want to expand?

I guess nobody is really dying to have the TV markets of Moscow, Idaho and Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The silly thing is that the dominoes haven't even stopped falling. The Big East will need a 14th member by 2015 when Navy joins (could be Army). The Big Twelve could still expand back to twelve... maybe taking Louisville and BYU.

My guess is that the Big Sky ends up taking Idaho in. Idaho will try being a FBS independent for awhile, but it's entirely possible they drop down to FCS level eventually anyway. New Mexico State... really has no place to go. Maybe the Southland conference if they drop to FCS?

The Mountain West and C-USA are merging (next year?). They'll have a conference championship game soon.

I don't think anyone is dying to watch the MWC Championship Game. Idaho will prefer to be an independent for a year or two rather than drop down to FCS. Professional road team using part of that money to bring in Sun Belt and CUSA teams for their mandatory home games. In fact they should try to get the Sun Belt to take them in.

I don't know that that part of Idaho and "sun belt" really belong in the same sentence, to be honest.

They have just as good a shot at the BCS NCG game as Boise by being an independent.

With the schedule they will have to play to remain solvent as a program, I would say that beating everyone on their schedule would garner them a unanimous #1 ranking. Of course I am as likely to win Powerball but the opportunity is there.

If (when?) the Big 12 expands, Louisville and BYU seem to be the logical choices; however, I know Oklahoma is pretty happy with a 10 team Big 12, and I'm pretty sure Texas is, too, because now they don't have to let a team from the inferior Big 12 North take a shot at them in the Championship game. So why would they expand, except if, in their next TV deal, they can make more money with 12 teams in their conference.

Money is the answer. The amount of revenue they'd get from a conference championship game wouldn't make it worth splitting the pie 12 ways instead of ten, and there's little to gain from those TV markets.
