Seriously? I'm 37 and went through a huge Beatles phase. In fact, I may still be in it, if mildly.

I'm 35 years old. If you are younger than the Beatles, and don't have a Beatles phase, you are seriously missing out.

Ringo played exactly what George Martin wanted him to do, on the first time, every dam time. He's a great time keeper and does some nice fills. He was exactly what the Beatles needed. If you're looking for someone to do funky time signatures and wow you with their technical ability, he's not the guy you're looking for.

Plus "Octopus's Garden" is a great sing along with the younglings in the van.

And, if for nothing else, I will give him a pass because of his performance on John Lennon Plastic Ono Band. He was the perfect drummer for the sparse sound Lennon was looking for on that record.

Its a dead horse now, but yep.  Just listen to any Beatles song, especially ones that are heavy on drumming.  It worked.  I can't see how anyone listens to the Beatles greatest songs and thinks "could use some more complex drumming, otherwise pretty good."

And John Lennon wasn't the best singer, guitarist or songwriter in The Beatles either so he should have just shut his pie hole. He was the biggest drug addict, however, so maybe that counts for something....

I heard Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End on the radio the other day and Ringo's drumming (even in that silly drum solo) just kicks all kinds of ass. From the nice fills of the "golden slumbers fill your eyes..." section to the monster beat of the "boy, you're gonna carry that weight" section and on and on, it's just a textbook on how to do rock drumming.

And I say that as a guy whose favorite drummer is this guy playing this kit:

If you need a loud drum sound in your song, that means your melody is lousy. Drums are best in moderation.

Ringo managed not to be too annoying, which makes him more tolerable than the drummers in 90% of rock bands.

Anyone know anything about the claims by Bernard Purdie that he recorded a bunch of the early Beatles songs? I never knew what to make of that. As a HUGE Beatles fan I never wanted to believe it, but Bernard Purdie is a great drummer in his own right (haha John reference) so who knows...
