I was in Dacula a few hours ago for a funeral. So I don't feel any kicks out of these replies. |

| BarkingUnicorn He didn't do it. I don't care if it is the South, NOBODY would be that dumb! House was burglarized. Then he came visiting. Door was open so he waltzed in and called the woman. He didn't live there so he didn't know anything was taken. |

I always find all the South hate amusing... notice no one is waving any Rebel flags or claiming that the south is even all that great, but five out of six of the Weenerss are 'preemptive' southern bashing. Get over it already. |

Southern kindness and gentility is a superficial side effect in people who are too stupid to know what to think of you right off the bat. |

Perhaps I should be more specific. There are a lot of really great people in the South. It's sad they're so outnumbered. |

A Dacula woman... told police that when she asked how the man got into her home, he replied that he "just got in." Like a cloud of mist. |

If the south sucks so much, how come so many northerners are moving down here? Could it be the weather, laid back attitude, lower taxes, affordable housing? Love it when you move south and tell us how much better it is up north, if it's that good, go home. |

I dunno, we thought it was a good place to do business, what with people who went to war with a global power, and didn't bring shoes. The South Will Rise Again! ...and this time we will have shoes |

Anyway, in The South you might be more likely to have people extend to you small courtesies, but they also expect them in return. Correspondingly, they have extremely thin skins. |

| dickfreckle HotIgneous Intruder: Southern kindness and gentility is a superficial side effect in people who are too stupid to know what to think of you right off the bat. You're half right. Southern hospitality is a myth. Yes, people smile and say hello, but it's so superficial as to be irritating. That old lady at the corner store might sing hello, but she's staring at you the whole time to make sure you aren't stealing anything. Even if you're a clean-cut white guy. I think Southerners like to advertise themselves as friendlier than the rest of the country because in their mind it gives them standing, and hides all the deep flaws of the region. Keep in mind that I'm a Southerner. But it's New Orleans, which is about as far removed from that whole Alabama drawl routine as it gets (not that we don't have our own horrible problems). But as someone who went to school in South Carolina and has family all over the southeast, I'm telling you that Southerners are just as douchetastic as anywhere else you might end up. Just not in the first 5 seconds. And that actually makes it worse than having some asshole in Philly snarl at you for wearing the wrong baseball cap. At least I know how he feels. |
||
| dickfreckle Oh, and by "half right" I meant that you're wrong to stereotype all Southerners as retards. Once you move past the poverty (poverty breeds ignorance more than race or other factors), we are no dumber than whatever part of the country you're from. |

Way too many of you are a bunch of ignorant, pretentious, racist dorks who care more about nascar, football, and your membership in the KKK not becoming public enough to affect your business or your political standing. We'll see how that works out for you. |

No, the south is a sneaky place filled with morons who pretend to uplift manners and courtesy while banging each other's wives and stealing anything not nailed down. Also, all the black people are lazy, and all the white people are just as lazy, but they get mad at the black people for being so lazy. Lawl. |

The difference between the north and the south (not across the board, obviously, but generally) is that northerners tend not to hide their indifference. Southerners care the same amount (read: almost none), but for some goofy ass reason, insist on acting like they do. It's just fake and silly. |

I live in NC, and we have a group known as "half-backs" these are folks that moved from the NE to Florida, decided it was too humid and hot, they move half way back to NE and wind up in NC, usually Charlotte. I spent my first 33 years in New England (5th Generation) and the next 34 years south of the Mason-Dixon. I don't miss the hustle and bustle of NE. |

Not saying yokels can't take a joke, but they get rather ornery when you don't extend them the small courtesies (such as apologizing if you bump into them; in NYC, for example, you wouldn't get more than a block a day if you stopped to apologize every time you nudged someone accidentally). Or maybe they can't take a joke, in which case they're liable to respond to my post with a haughty "Oh yeah? Well I'll have you know..." post of their own. ;) |

Politeness at the point of a gun. (I reckon.) I'm thinking most people who prefer politeness do so for the sake of itself, and that not being a bad way to go about. |

I probably did misinterpret "thin-skinned", but in a thread filled with disgust for Southerners, It should be understandable. My jab aside, my response to your post was more about Al Capp and his usage of an ethnic group to which he didn't belong in his social commentary. Had a cartoonist from, say, Dogpatch Ky written a long running strip casting an enclave of Russian Jews in a negative light to illustrate the failings and foibles of society at large, would we deem those present-day members of that community "thin-skinned" should they take offense? Point being, Southerners, on the whole, and Appalachians, in particular, typically possess a self-deprecating wit and aren't that easily offended. For example, I myself frequently negotiate fairly large crowds here in Montreal in fairly good time, all the while apologizing to those I bump with a nod and a muttered "excuse" and I've yet to knock the shiat out of anyone. |
