Exactly. As if he were a senile old man for the past 15 years? The guy knew something was going on.. Of course he did. How he could live with himself and call himself a leader is beyond me. A leader would have grabbed that situation by the collar and showed the entire college that regardless of position if you screw up you will be handled. That would be someone and someone who might be worthy of a statue.

The book also details the long and frosty relationship Paterno had with Sandusky while they worked together at Penn State. According to the book, the two were never friendly and late in Sandusky's tenure, Paterno felt the defense was not performing well and neither was Sandusky.

Paterno did not want to fire Sandusky because he was so popular in the community and with fans, according to the book. The book indicates that Sandusky showed interest in taking an early retirement in 1999, and Paterno encouraged him to do so and let his assistant know he would not be the next head coach at Penn State. Sandusky and Curley negotiated a retirement package, and among Sandusky's demands was to stay on through the 1999 season. The book indicates Paterno reluctantly agreed, and then regretted the decision when the team, which was considered one of the national championship favorites going into the season and reached No. 2 in the nation, lost three games late in the year with an underperforming defense.

Sandusky's early retirement at age 55 has led to speculation that a 1998 allegation by a boy against Sandusky that was never prosecuted by authorities led to Penn State quietly pushing Sandusky out. Paterno told a grand jury he was unaware of that allegation but evidence uncovered by Freeh report investigators suggest that he did.

Yet Sandusky worked closely with Paterno for thirty years. Paterno was publicly "frosty" towards Sandusky during those last years probably because he found out about the kiddie ass rapings. Yet he didn't go public with it for supposedly PR purposes while Sandusky was able to parlay a lucrative retirement package, and continued to hang around State College, where Paterno was a cult figure.
Everything about this indicates that there was some kind of blackmail going on by Sandusky and if that is so then others (influential and politically connected alumni) have to be involved. Either that plays into this scenario, or the entire mess is void of logic.

I believe it was in the original GJ testimony where Paterno describes he didn't understand the concept of sex between a grown man and a boy. That I can maybe comprehend from a doddering old buffoon, but even that kind of naivety from someone who was on this planet for 80+ years requires spending all of that time in the most reclusive, restrictive of bubbles where, if you didn't know that could happen, you most likely were oblivious to all kinds of human behavior.

As for the "not knowing sodomy" thing, you'll find plenty of people who assume it's "hurr butt sex", which is a woefully incomplete definition, but at least they have their own interpretation, incorrect as it is.
