| Il Douchey Mr. Kelly acts as if the Irish masters were sitting atop a limitless pile of potatoes, but were simply too selfish or mean to share them with their starving countrymen. Just as today's liberals think the government masters have a limitless pile of money that can be thrown at every problem without consequence. They feel noble for wanting to give away money that others haven't even earned yet. /$16 trillion in debt. There will be a reckoning. At least Ryan understands this |

Il Douchey: Mr. Kelly acts as if the Irish masters were sitting atop a limitless pile of potatoes, but were simply too selfish or mean to share them with their starving countrymen. Actually, it was the English. And at no point in the Irish Potato Famine could Ireland not feed itself if the British government had been willing to allow some of the exported food to remain in the country. It wouldn't even have made that big of a blip in the Empire's food supply - but making sure the invisible hand was too plump to get the sparkly rings off its sausage fingers was more important than people's lives. Hell, it wasn't even as if the Brits learned - there were at least 4 more similar, avoidable famines in India alone after the Irish one. /Romney/Ryan; the Irish Potato Famine forever! |

FTA: Ryan declared that America was at an "insidious moral tipping point," adding that "the president is accelerating this." He went on to say that a capacious safety net "lulls able-bodied people"-I paused at the slightly archaic turn of phrase-"into lives of complacency and dependency, which drains them of their very will and incentive to make the most of their lives. It's demeaning." "I would feed you and your starving family but I really don't want to insult you" is how I read that. Good article. Republicans seem to have this idea that unemployment numbers are completely tied to people's moral choices. In fact, if you look up the Great Depression on Conservapedia it's just called "The Big Lazy". /K, I made that up but I still wouldn't be surprised. |

They learned to outsource their famines to India at least. /and when the Irish got to New York they faced the same welfare argument that they faced in the UK. And it's exactly the same argument still going on today. |

The Irish famine, widely regarded as the worst natural disaster of the 19th century There was nothing natural about it. The potato was just one of many crops that failed, but was the only one forced upon the peasants by the ruling British who used the captive Irish lands to harvest grain for export back to England. It was genocide, no less. |

At least Ryan understands this I am no fan of Paul Ryan, or ignorant statements like the one above. As has been pointed out - Ireland exported food during the Famine. The Famine was an economic disaster, and in a country that relied on subsistence farming an economic disaster, in conjunction with the policies mentioned resulted in mass starvation. And yes moralism was proximally responsible for much of the death, the true cause was the trade policies of the UK at the time. It was those trade policies that over the long term that happened as a result of the Acts of Union 1800 that resulted in the economic state that let the Irish into the Famine. No one in politics today is suggesting unequal trade policies like the ones that let to the famine. I think that this article is kind of unfair. |

Have you been paying attention to the things the "conservatives" want to cut? People will die if they get their way. Yes, and these policies will be a disaster if there is a wholesale crash in the subsistence farming economy of the USA. All I am saying is that it is a different thing. I object to bring up the famine in a case like this, for political points even when I agree with the ultimate point, because it helps propagate some of the myths about the famine. The causes of the famine were a long term economic subjection of the Irish economy from the 1800 Acts of Union. If there had been free trade between Ireland and the rest of the world there would have been no famine. There are plenty of things to bash Paul Ryan with, but this is not appropriate. |

It is to stop feeding the economic war machine and to actually raise taxes for once, especially on the rich, who got a tax CUT while starting 2 foreign occupations! Absurd. |

At least Ryan understands this During the 'potato famine' (during which a number of my ancestors came to this country) Ireland was a net exporter of food. Countless people starved, but it didn't matter as long as their rent-seeking (motherf*cking) English overlords got paid. So it isn't that the "Irish overlords" (AKA the English) were sitting atop an endless pile of food, but they had enough that they could have alleviated a great deal of the suffering that took place, but instead chose to line their own pockets. So, in short, f*ck you, you genocide-encouraging prick. /My middle name is "Derry". You figure it out. |

BlahBlahBlahNeil: If there had been free trade between Ireland and the rest of the world there would have been no famine. That statement makes no sense. It was free trade principles that caused the famine. The British wouldn't keep the food in Ireland precisely because they could get better prices from virtually everywhere else. Keeping the food in Ireland and then providing it at prices the Irish could have afforded (which is to say providing it free or so low as to be no never-mind) would have been government interference in trade, which was why the British government refused to stop exports. The various "relief efforts" were ways to make the Irish provide equivalent value for the food as could be gotten by selling it elsewhere, either by semi-slave labor in workhouses or disposing of their land to get food. |
||
| A Dark Evil Omen This article is very perceptive, because these are, in fact, exactly the same policies we deal with today. Rightists like to sell the lie that there is some sublime difference between the old British aristocracy and the modern American one because the terminology is different, but the truth is that the same aristocratic class is pushing the same policies to enrich themselves by our blood and our pain that they always have. The great Irish famine and countless other unnatural disasters caused by the same people and the same policies for the same reasons are capitalism laid bare. |
