good jorb providing the deslidified link, subby. I'm sure I'm not alone in encouraging all slideshow submitters to follow your example. |

Image #13: The R-Word Index The Concept: Official recessions coincide with a surge in the number of times the word recession appears in print - well before the two quarter delay it takes for a country to call it. The Proof: The Economist tracks the word's use in the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times and has done a great job of highlighting the start date of recessions, including those in 1990, 2001 and 2007. Finally, proof that business news editors rule the world! |

Snapper Carr: good jorb providing the deslidified link, subby. I'm sure I'm not alone in encouraging all slideshow submitters to follow your example. I wonder if someone who can actually afford $5 would sponsor subby for this noble act. I would, but I'm a broke ass. |

Someone needs to verify the Latvian hookers. You know. For science |

Number of Hobos burned alive with impunity is not a stat, it's an aberration. Put it in context and you will see that Young Republicans LOVE homeless people and would rather snuggle up with them than douse them with an accellerant, shriek Yippie Ki Aye MFer and vanish into the night, seeking the cloak of darkness under which they can upload their latest Boys Will Be Boys hijinx. Here's my economic indicator, number of popped collar pussified frat boys found choked to death in dumpsters last week. |

The Proof: Various aspects of society will experience a reduction in income during a time of reduced income. And people will talk about it. |

There are two that I use. There is a large auto dealership nearby that handles a lot of used pickup trucks. I know that things are tough when it's full of late-model tricked-out P/Us. Second, the short-line railroads in the area lease track space to the majors as a place for them to store railcars. For several years now, they've been full of idle cars, mostly intermodals and centerbeam flats. Those are starting to get put back in service now. |

I have the weirdest economic indicator right now. |

I wonder if someone who can actually afford $5 would sponsor subby for this noble act. I would, but I'm a broke ass. Subby outs himself and I'll do it. |

There was a shoe cobbler near where I grew up. He had a knack for predicting the economy based on the number of upper middle class people who brought shoes in to be repaired rather than throwing them out and buying new. |
||
| RyansPrivates I have my own, albeit unscientific, index. I actually count the number of commercial business signs that are burnt out/partially burnt out on my drive home. Invariably, there are more burnt out when the economy is in the tank. The problem is that this is just one market (Dallas). Good news is that there aren't as many today burnt out as there were a few months ago. |
