More than 1,990 young women attended convocation during Rush Week, kicking off the festivities leading up to what is affectionately known as "Squeal Day." I never get invited to those parties. *sigh* |

Who among us with a straight-minded penis doesn't love 1,900 squealing-with-joy 18 year old hotties? Damn. That was exciting, be back in like 12 minutes. |

Sororities and Fraternities are largely for teenagers who, after leaving high school, figured out that in the real world nobody actually gives a damn about their social life. With their reality at risk of being shattered like so much glass they quickly find a place to continue the delusion for a few more years. |

But I don't have a problem with young adults joining a social club to make new friends and connections to make the transition from high school to adulthood easier, since they're leaving their old social support system at home. |

Because all these girls are farking stupid. They are the 'woo!' girls you see in shiatty "Girls Gone Wild" videos, and will later regret and deny ever being part of anything so stupid. Of course, there are those who will claim that these were their 'best' years'...think about that. /and frats are gay. |

About 90-percent of them are there for an M-R-S degree. Also, many of them are virgins, but won't be by Christmas. Goddamn I miss being a student at an SEC school. Best 6.5 years of my life getting my 4-year degree. |

Wow..They won the right to pay for their new friends and to be drunken ho's ..Congrats.. Frats are the same, or possibly even worse over-all.. Ya..Maybe your "friend" can help get you on as a jr. sales associate at the Verizon store or at daddies car dealership.. Sorority girls seem to start out as Psychology,Biology or Education majors..But almost all of them end up in Business/Management.. The Frat boys start out in Engineering .And most of them end up in Business/Management too.. |

Mr. Shabooboo: Ya..Maybe your "friend" can help get you on as a jr. sales associate at the Verizon store or at daddies car dealership.. It's a little more important than that at Alabama (sorry, PDF link). It makes more sense if you've ever lived in Alabama and know how tribal the place really is. As for jobs, I've seen really middling students land top jobs on Wall Street- their resume alone would never have gotten them assistant night manager at Safeway. /some of the girls in TFA are über-fuggly |

I'm 25 years into my career and in senior management. Of all of the senior managers I have ever known it does seem that a very small percentage hail from frats or sororities. Most of the frats I know of are selling insurance, and the sorority girls flocked into HR. |

A lot of them are less about the social shaming/rape/hazing/etc. and more about charity events etc. now (mostly as a result of being busted for the other stuff, but still, progress). |

Squeal day was always fun because the sorority girls would find out what sorority they got into at the old gym, and then run half a mile down to the sorority houses. And their path would take them right in front of my dorm. We would all get out with some drinks and watch the hot girls running past. Mallet uber alles. |

Being in the Greek system was basically no different than joining any other social group/club on campus. It's just that there were a lot more people interested in the Greek system which meant a higher chance of problem children being more visible, which helped perpetuate the stereotype. I thought it was great though. Did a lot of charity work and partied a lot with the sorority girls. Most of what people think they know about fraternities, they got from Hollywood. I have heard all the "buying friends" arguments and I saw it more as buying into campus opportunities that weren't possible otherwise. /SigEp |

| wildlifer So mommy and daddy are going to cover the monthly dues? The wife quit her sorority during junior year, the dues went from $20 per month, to $250. My non- Greek "frat", Forestry club, was only $5/ month. |

eraser8: Why DO [American] women squeal when they get excited? This is a serious question, by the way. You don't wanna hear what excited Arab women do. However, Japanese women squeal vigorously. So do SE Asian women. Subcontinental women, OTOH, I have not observed to squeal. Assuming they don't, that would put the Asiatic Squeal Line in the neighborhood of Burma. If you're into anthropology you could look into the influences on squealing vs. ululating cultures and make a thesis out of it. |

| laulaja Started thru Rush as a college freshman more than a lifetime ago. Didn't really understand system at time; dropped out after Day 1's sole re-visit invite. Did much better on own; also able to "claim" mbrsp in what was called politely Gamma Delta Iota, Gallant & Dedicated Independents. You can easily figure what else we were called, not so polite! |

eraser8: Why DO women squeal when they get excited? Having consulted the Internets I have come up dry. What I have personally observed is that women (from a squealing population) can be reliably made to squeal when presented with something they really like... ...no, not that. Put that away. I mean something spectacularly valuable or lovely, and certainly never anything that has nasty, wiry hairs sticking out of it. I've got squeals out of women with jewelery, concert tickets, and a trip to the beach. It's a consistently visual thing, as the squeal always comes at the sight of the thing, not just news of it. (Attempting to make blind women squeal would be an interesting test of this hypothesis.) Looking to animals, predators like dogs and cats observe stony silence when presented with treats, which stands to reason, but foragers like hens cluck excitedly which seems to be associated with swarming behavior. One can easily picture a hunter-gatherer woman squealing at the sight of a fruiting tree, which would prompt the other cavebiatches to set upon it and pick it clean like piranhas while squealing and scaring the shiat out of everything within earshot. Well, maybe. Best guess. |

At my school it's often pointed out that Greeks have higher mean GPAs. I like that this is because they study liberal arts, business, and anything else easy enough to not interfere with their important getting-drunk-and-acting-stupid time. |

I have observed the whole anti-Greek attitude for years, and unlike many I don't dismiss it as someone who didn't get a bid to join. I have found that an anti-Greek attitude is most often expressed by people who never rushed a fraternity or sorority. So 20 years after college I started speaking with some anti-Greek friends. I have found, most often, that they developed their anti-Greek opinions before entering college based on stereotypes they obtained from older relatives who were anti-Greek, or from older fellow dorm-mates who were anti-Greek. In other words, they were not anti-Greek based on some negative experience, but instead because they adopted someone else's negative opinion. If there is a failing on the part of Greek Letter Organizations, it is their failure to even attempt to address this issue at the most critical time, the first few weeks in the student life of a freshman. Instead, the Greeks are focused on recruiting only those who already them positively and are actively seeking membership. As soon as fall rush concludes the Greeks cease membership recruitment and focus on pledging, etc... leaving the stereotypes unaddressed. Worse, since they are focused on busy Greek schedules (pledging, building float, etc...) they don't have a lot of time to hang out with unaffiliated people, making it appear that they are actively ignoring unaffiliated people, unintentionally reinforcing the negative stereotypes. I think most the Greeks on most campuses would benefit from setting up displays in the entrance areas of each dorm upon the start of the school year, and attempt to push a pro-Greek message (instead of pro-specific fraternity message) the first few weeks of each year. Some people need to be actively invited before they would think they are welcome to attend rush events. When I first entered college I had a negative view of fraternities based on comments I heard from older college friends, and when asked if I was going to rush I responded," I don't think fraternities are for me." The person I spoke to convinced me to withhold my opinion and rush a few different fraternities (not just his own), explaining that I would probably change my mind. I did and ended up joining a fraternity. Had it not been for that person asking me to look at a few different fraternities I probably would have continues to base my opinions of all Greeks based on a few older friends opinions, instead of my own experience. |
