| aerojockey No one's going to buy it for $95,000 if you only gross $200 per day, especially when the limited housing situation is only temporary. Nice try, though. However, as a failed business owner he'll have a leg up on most of his peers in the job hunt, so it might have been a worthwhile investment after all, and who's to say losing a few thousand dollars on an adventure isn't worthwhile. |

FTFA: "5 seperate shower stalls" ![]() Either he is catering to the prudish market who hate having homos looking at their junk, or he is catering to the market that like to double up in a private shower stall. Seems he wins both ways and gets to charge a premium for privacy. |

As mentioned above, it's not so much a business as a social experiment doomed to financial failure. It doesn't take much effort to lose money on an idea. And instead of refining his idea to make it profitable, he instead decided to walk away and focus on his 'music' career. Must be nice to have rich parents to finance your stupid ideas. |

Even if he does pour his pretty considerable focus into something more lucrative (and props to him for doing more than just showing up at a low-end job) he'll still have the defaults from all that debts hanging around. So when an HR drone plugs in his SSN to get back his financials it will put him far down the pile or DQ him. |

Don't be such a negative nancy. Since it's a truck it can be driven to the next piece of shiat town with a limited housing situation and setup there. And he can try jacking up the price a bit. |

Actually if this could be done a lot cheaper, I would love to see these parked outside every major national park and national forest. I camped at Glacier National Park last summer on the east side. There was ONE female shower for the two camping areas (~50 sites in each I think) closest to the east entrance. It was $2.50 for I think four minutes which is difficult to do if you have long hair. I didn't even mind that though, since the money was going to the park - what I minded was how crowded it was. I showered twice in six days because of the crowding; we got lucky and only had to wait for 2-3 people on those days. If there had been a privately owned, comparably priced shower outside the park where the waits were short, I would have showered every day. Thank god it was cold most of our stay there, let's just put it that way... |

Well, I found him on the corner of Seventh and Main In the Iowa township of Sloan (Township of Sloan...) He's tired, and he's hungry, he's old, and he's grungy And parked in a no-parkin' zone Well I bent down an' says "How ya doin', old fella?" He tried to get up on his own (On his own...) When I gave him a piece a' my ham salad sandwich He reached up an' licked on my nose He gave him a piece of his ham salad sandwich And reached up and licked on his nose Old Sloan... Well, I opened the door of my old beat-up semi Threw an old dirty shirt on the floor (On the floor...) He hopped in an' laid hisself down by the gearshift Curled up and started to snore For years we went truckin' them highways together On the byways of life we did roam (They did roam...) With his paws on the dashboard an' his head out the winda An' his ears in the breeze, gently blowin' With his paws on the dashboard, his head out the winder And his ears in the breeze gently blowin' Old Sloan... When one mornin' last May, four miles north a' Mondamin I stopped to use a pay telephone (Pay telephone...) Old Sloan made a fireplug, while I made a phone call An' when I come back, he was gone Well I searched forty miles of that Interstate highway And the byways that we used to roam (Used to roam...) From Ricketts to Red Line, Magnolia to Woodbine But I just couldn't find poor ol' Sloan From Fiscus to Jacksonville, Quick to Correctionville Looked like the end for old Sloan Poor ol' fella. He didn't have no license, nor shots, nor nothin'. I thought he's a goner. When on a cold winter day on the ninth of November I's drivin' my rig all alone (All alone...) When my eye caught a blur in my left rear-view mirror An' my ears heard the sound of old Sloan He's runnin' as fast as his old legs could run 'im An' cryin' for me to slow down (To slow down...) His tail was a-waggin', his tongue was a-draggin' An' I opened the door for old Sloan His tail was a-waggin', his tongue was a-draggin' And he opened the door for old Sloan Old Sloan... Well I gave him a hug as he licked me all over An' I threw him his old dirty bone (Old dirty bone...) Then in through the winda jumped a poodle from Pisgah An' she set on down beside Sloan Then in through the winder come a poodle from Pisgah And set herself down beside Sloan. Old Sloan... A good business broker I knew always said, 'never pay more then 3 times yearly gross revenues for a business' and this was pre-Bush recession. So using that method business is only worth $15k tops. |

Thank god it was cold most of our stay there, let's just put it that way... There's a technical problem with fresh water/sewage. If you can't get a city water and sewage hookup, you'll be majorly screwed by the weight of the water. Water weighs 8lb/gal, and a low-flow showhead uses 1.5 gal/min. If you give people 10-min showers, that's 15 gal and 120 lbs of mass to transport. Your army "water buffalo" M149 trailer is 400 gal, or 26.7 10-min showers. Sewage of course weighs the same. If you have a city water hookup, fine, but they don't let you just use the fire hydrant and dump the drain into the storm sewer. The hydrant isn't metered and is reserved for fire use only. If there WAS a line out there, you might as well build a regular building. The water supply is the important part, building or trailer is a minor detail. |

$95k isn't bad if it covers the 53ft van, the water tanker and a truck to move them around with. A good sleeper-cab truck is worth that by itself. If it's just the two trailers, it's a total rip. |
||
| Whatthefark
Shower trailers are nothing new. You can rent one if you want. Not busting on the kid or anything. He's got initiative and that's good. I'm just saying these have been around for a while. |

Five stalls, open 4pm - 11pm, give 35 hours of showering. If he's getting 20 - 25 customers per day, and assuming 15 minutes per shower, he's running at one-sixth capacity. If the potential demand is as high as the article suggests, why so little business? |

i was thinking about moving up there but i really don't want to work on a rig. i suppose there is a niche for someone though with a class A cdl with haz mat endorsements? |

He has put an ad on Craigslist.com asking for $95,000 "or best offer." HA! Seriously? The business doesn't even gross that in a year, and comes with maintenance costs. He's probably lucky to gross $5,000 a month. If you have $95,000 to invest, there are much better choices with a quicker and more stable return on your investment. Those oil guys probably aren't going to be up there forever, they're probably not there year round, and if anyone else gets a similar idea your profits just got cut. But I guess maybe some sucker that just came into some money might come along and pay it. Decent start up for a young kid wanting to make some extra cash, but not for a business person with $95,000 to invest. He's dreaming thinking it's worth that. |

jimmyjackfunk: i was thinking about moving up there but i really don't want to work on a rig. i suppose there is a niche for someone though with a class A cdl with haz mat endorsements? That depends on how much you want to make. I've known several people that work on rigs, and they made great money, but they burnt out after awhile. With a Class A cdl you could probably get a railroad job when they're hiring. BNSF operates up there, though the better paying jobs are mostly going to require travel to sites where you work for a certain amount of time and go home for a certain amount of time. My husbands schedule with UP is 8 on 7 off. They also do hire contractors. You could do OTR trucking I'm sure if you don't mind driving a lot. The oil companies do hire truck drivers, and with a class A with hazmat you'd be a shoe in. Also I dunno how much labor you wanna do, but a lot of those type of jobs require you to load and unload stuff yourself, and possibly do other labor, not just driving. As far as strictly local non-oil stuff, I don't know anything about that area so I can't say. I have to imagine if some kid is running a shower semi due to lack of facilities there's not many choices up there for strictly local non-oil related work. |
