I can understand why he was arrested. Just takes one drunken idiot to hit his head and drown while his family sues the Royals for their family member being a dumbass.

Everywhere you look at the K there are signs saying you will get arrested for entering the fountains. Fark the idiot.

And it's been like this for at least 20 years or so as well. I knew a gal from high school that got arrested for doing this while I was still in college.

Trespassing to grab the ball. Like they tell you on signs everywhere and before the games at the K

You'd be amazed how many people would accept a trespassing conviction just to get their hands on a home run ball. Gotta take the ball away to make the "no swimming" policy effective.

Just think about how far a fan will go for Adam Dunn's 4000th strikeout ball.

consider this: Kygz: Why did he have to give the ball back?

I know right? The same shiat happened to me the last time I trespassed and took my neighbors TV. farkers wouldn't let me keep that either.

Seriously, is anyone good at making an analogy anymore these days?

If it was a White Sox fan, the Royals are lucky he didn't celebrate by beating up the third base coach.

Actually, you could say the ballpark owns any foul ball/home run ball. There was a time in major league baseball where any HR/Foul ball had to be returned. But most parks allow the fans to keep them as it's good PR. However, it may be the case in this park that any ball hit into the fountain belongs to the park.

Happened once ~9 years so it is obviously indicative of the whole fan base.

As was stated earlier you have to go pass a lot of no tresspassing/don't enter the fountains signs at the K. Saying he had a right to that ball because he paid a ticket would be liking saying he could enter the media booths to chase a ball

Hmmm... I wonder if Adam Dunn ever got the ball back or if it mysteriously disappeared somewhere between the fountain and the security office.

If you follow the links in TFA, you'll find that "...the White Sox said they were able to retrieve Dunn's home run ball."

The Ligues were hicks from Indiana who admitted to having no interest in baseball and just wanted to get drunk. In the other incident it came out shortly after that they were Cubs fans who had been drinking all day at a game at Wrigley and came down to Comiskey for the night game. One paper interviewed the guy's girlfriend and she said she had no idea what he was doing at a White Sox game.

But of course that's all irrelevant.

I understand that but why forced to give the ball back? If you get arrested then they just take your possessions then give them back later.

FTA: One industrious and, judging by his jersey, long time Chicago White Sox fan decided to retrieve the ball from its watery grave.

His jersey is for a player (Youkilis) who is new to the Sox. How does this parlay into long-time fan?

Can't be true, otherwise they'd just take important milestone balls.  As it stands, they will track you down and try to bargain with you to get it back.  Maybe 2 signed Dunn bats if you give it back.  Chance to meet Dunn in the clubhouse.   Etc.

I've been a White Sox fan since 1981.  Does that require me to buy a 1981 jersey and nothing later?

/Actually want a 1981 jersey
//Wont pay $200 for a polyester shirt

How did you get that from my statement? I said nothing of the sort. I was only commenting on the claim of Deadspin that the man must be a long-time fan based on the fact that he has a White Sox jersey. However, since the jersey is only a few months old, that claim is impossible to make based on the jersey alone.

If the jersey was an original '81 jersey or even late-nineties or early two thousands they could have made that deduction. However, you can't look at a two-month-old shirt and say definitively "The owner of this shirt has been a fan for a long time."
