The All-Stars and White Stockings had a contest to see who could give the Sphinx a "black eye." They all took turns flinging a baseball at the face of the Sphinx in an attempt to hit its eye.

Chicago White Stockings? I thought it was the Boston Red Panties.

Or, you know, you could just go read the book that actually documents the 1889 world tour of baseball players instead of whatever other book io9 was paid to hawk.

Anyway the 1889=90 guys behaved like jerks everywhere. The White Stoking brought along their African American mascot. For kicks they dragged him through the streets of Cairo in a catcher's mask.

The 1913-1914 Tour featured Jim Thorpe and was a whole lot more civil.

Mark Lamster's book is probably the definitive history of Spalding's tour although several fine books have been written about it.

My book is the only book written about the 1913-1914 tour which went to more countries and had some genuine all stars like Sam Crawford and Tris Speaker participate. The earlier tour left such a bad taste in the throats of John McGraw and Charles Comiskey that they pulled their resources and put on their own tour, Comiskey and McGraw were totally different types of men. The could never be friends but they both despised Spalding with the intensity of a white hot sun. They wanted to put together a better tour than he did and they did.

Thanks for sharing the info. It isn't every day that I find another Delawarean interested in early baseball history. Besides your book (which I will be buying shortly), do you have any recommendations for books from the 1880-1920 range?

No offense meant, Delawheredad. I realize that my post could be construed as a badmouth to the author, it was meant more as a badmouth to io9. I will have to pick up your book as well, I am a sucker for baseball history.

A lot of folks consider this the best baseball book ever written.

My personal favorite is "The Pitch That Killed" by Mike Sowell which tells the story of Carl Mays beaning and killing Ray Chapman during the intense American League pennant race of 1920. One of the most hated men in baseball just happened to kill one of the most beloved. It is unbelievably moving and very sad.

For How things were run There is a book by Robert Smith who was an old time team executive. He takes you to the behind the scenes things like travel and running a team during the deadball era through the twenties called "Baseball in the Afternoon".

If you want to read one of the finest baseball novels ever there is "The Celebrant" by Rolfe Greenberg

It tells the fictional story of a family of immigrant Jews who become involved with the Giants Of Christy Mathewson and John McGraw.
It is very evocative of the era.

I just looked for this on Barnes & Noble for my Nook, but no dice. Do I gotta go to Amazon to buy it? I won't do the Google if they're ripping you off.
