Seau's autopsy shows that he had no illegal drugs and a cocktail of harmless prescription drugs in his system. No word on whether his anus was remarkable

consider this: Guess he was just upset over splitting up with Tom Cruise.

Gretchen, stop trying to make Tom Cruise happen! He's not going to happen!

My Executive director at work used to do autopsies for the Air Force. He said "anus was unremarkable" (or whatever the phrase was) was fairly standard boilerplate language on a report. I guess it's just one of those things they have to check.

I asked him once if he ever filled out "anus was magnificent" on one of his reports and he almost choked on his beer.

A commenter brings up a good point.

The phone had its memory chip missing? That screams of foul play. I bet Seau found out about how Sandusky and his Penn State pedo-ring were behind 911 with Haliburton and the Reptillians and was murdered to silence him. It's the only thing that makes sense

Although he didn't appear distraught, remember within the previous year he had drove off the road at high speed down a hillside which could have easily been a sucide attempt over his explaination that he fell asleep. The memory chip angle is a little odd as why would someone dispose of that before committing suicide. Still, nothing was taken that I have seen reported so if it was a criminal act, what was the purpose of the killing. It still smells like a suicide even if there are a few unanswered questions.

I watched an autopsy once and they check pretty much everything. I almost yakked when I saw the level of detail they disassemble parts of people to. I wish I had turned away when they "investigated" the genitals.

Remember when we were gonna cancel the whole NFL over this? Not that the brain shiat isn't serious business but there was no sign seau had the same brain thing the other chest suicide guy had. This, people, is why you don't rush to judgment. Even when you think you know something for sure.when is it best to wait for all the evidence? Every. Single. Time.

I'm sure the county coroner has the same caliber equipment and expertise as the most advanced brain research labs in the country.

Ah. I took the articles contention that there was no brain trauma to mean no cte but apparently that has yet to be determined.

The preliminary examination by a coroner who isn't perhaps trained to spot the issue doesn't mean anything. On top of that, with the instructions to turn the brain over for further study, the examiner probably didn't do much beyond weight the brain and bag it. The real test will be when the experts in this issue get their hands on it. Honestly it doesn't really matter if the football activity did it in, or if Seau was just predisposed to mental health issues, he is dead.

That being said, if nothing was visible, perhaps the deterioriation in Seau's brain wasn't quite at as advanced a state as other NFL players who have prematurely killed themselves. I have little doubt that tests will show that Seau's brain had deteriorated to some extent and it seems likely that would effect his behavior. His playing style and length of career means he was subjected to tens of thousands of hits from games to practices. He may not have reported concussions, but more and more evidence is showing that it is the routine, constant hits that do the damage more than the large shots (you don't want either but a few concussions isn't as bad and lots of little hits).

There is going to have to be significant changes in the way the game is played. In play style, tackling equipment, or some combination thereof. We know that athletes in contact sports are suffering long-term brain damage because scientists have been studying athletes' brains. Now, it's not going to be the end of football like the mouth-breathers who spit out the words "two-hand touch" and "skirt" think; but the game has evolved significantly over the last 20 years, and will do so in the next 20 - possibly more drastically, but the sooner the NFL, the NCAA, and the high school athletic associations realize the scope of what they're dealing with, the better off the sport will be.

You can get it prescribed. I had one for 500mg tablets which is 2 Aleve OTC tablets. It made them cheap with insurance.

Since Fark doesn't greenlight interesting articles, check this one out. Interestingly, veteran MLB players have a higher mortality rate at younger ages than veteran NFL players. Only the guys with "obese" BMIs even die at the rate average MLBers die. NFL players with the same BMI as baseball players? Die at about half the rate.

A problem, though, is that the average BMI in football keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Yeah, I'm sort of with you there. Not that I don't think cte is real. I do. And it's not that I don't think football causes it. It does. It's just that I don't think you weigh football mortality rates against the general population. I think you weigh them against other freakin' huge guys who work physically demanding jobs. When you look at the mortality rates of miners and steel workers and fishermen and carpenters - especially linemen vs other overweight guys, then the disparity is not so great. That's all I'm saying.

I wonder what impact it would have on their results if they could isolate continued use of amphetamines in players as a variable. NFL players in the 60s and 70s would have used once a week, but baseball players would have been using 5 or six times a week for six months.

This this and this. That and most those drugs don't go well with steroids. Another Chargers player was just busted for performance enhancing drugs the other day.

It comes that way.... I've got a prescription for it. It's kind of like Motrin, which is essentially 4 Advil. Heck, it's cheaper for me to get a prescription (60 pills a month for $5) than it is to buy that many Aleve.
