| ClavellBCMI If it weren't for the need to yank the reactors out whole, thus requiring them to turn the ship into a giant block of Swiss cheese, they could turn it into a museum, but as the article states, having to then go back and, basically, re-build the ship minus the reactors would probably run the costs up to a rather large amount (I estimate around 100-200 million dollars just for the re-build, over and above the costs of cutting the ship open to yank out the reactors). |

| simplicimus Second oldest commissioned ship in the Navy. Oh well, we still have USS Constitution to protect us. |

So, what are the odds that someone gets a new carrier commissioned and names it CVN-65-A? |
||
| jimmyego FTFA: "Following the inactivation period, it will be towed over to ...Newport News Shipbuilding - where it will be defueled. They'll remove all the fuel from it.". Thank goodness they followed that statement up with an explanation. I'd already assumed defueling involved stuffing it with drunk midgets until it sank. |

FWIW, some nutsos are theorizing she'll be deliberately sunk in the Strait of Hormuz as a false-flag action to force a war with Iran. So, there's that possibility. |

since they cannot turn it into a museum, how about inviting in the google street map people to do their thing? |
||
| Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom Why should it be a museum? Because a shiatty 60's sci-fi show named their spaceship after it? |
||
| Bit'O'Gristle
Why don't they just remove the reactors, then tow it out to sea, sink it in a hail of missiles and gunfire in a huge explosion of patriotic fire? Would be cool to see, and would give reef fish and other assorted critters a great home. |

Sad... Is it dusty in here, or is it just me? Or is it perhaps the uranium dioxide dust rising from the manhandling required to remove the reactors? /duct tape |

I say we convert it for space flight and add a wave motion gun; can't let the Japanese have all the glory in the battle against the Gamilons. |

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Why should it be a museum? Because a shiatty 60's sci-fi show named their spaceship after it? You could... I don't know, look up its history and find out that it's pretty historic? If you have internets, which you might not. |

Oh and two words- Cruise Ship . Why not ? Carriers can handle almost anything. Sure. no giant pool but how awesome would that be to have a damn flat top as a cruise wessel ? |
||
| Tom_Slick
I doubt there will ever be a nuclear powered carrier museum ship. They are essentially built around their reactors which will have to be removed. |

Considering the WWII version of the Enterprise (probably the most decorated ship of the war) was scrapped. I guess Im not to surprised. /that one should have been a museum ![]() RIP USS Enterprise |

Why can't they turn it into a museum? The irradiated reactors are going to hot for centuries, and now they propose to rip them out and bury them in the ground somewhere. Why not have a vigilant eye on them as part of a museum? It would be pretty easy to just close a few doors and keep the people out of the reactor rooms. Maybe even go as far as to fill the rooms with spray foam to keep it that way. |
||
| zinny
We cant save everything. Historical hoarding is still hoarding. As much as I'd like to see it be made into a museum, I would have to agree. This isn't a musket, or a cannon salvaged from some ship. |

Meh; muesum ships are giant white elephants. Plus, the reactors make the difference. They don't call her the mobile Chernobyl for nothin'. Plus this is the enterprise that SHOULD have been saved http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_En terprise_(CV-6) / that is all |

Dinki: Time to replace it- [strikefighterconsultinginc.com image 850x472] That seems like a terrible design...if the plane that's just landing does a bolt or a touch-and-go, it's going to go straight into the intake of that fan.There's probably a pretty massive air current there too, because the fan is holding the carrier in the air. |

Dinki: Time to replace it- [strikefighterconsultinginc.com image 850x472] Who designed that stupid thing? Bolter the approach, and your ass is right over the forward port lift fan! Which will be creating suction right there, in order to create lift by blowing downwards. Good luck not getting sucked into it! |

Sold for scrap - to the Chicom monster undoubtedly. Fine, one way or the other it will be an artificial reef someday - encrusted in coral or Chicom skulls - I can go either way. |

With modern planes having V-take off abilities. I don't think that needs to be addressed any more. An F-35 can be used on the Helicarrier. |

SweetSaws: FTA: They're selling off the 90,000 tons of scrap metal. Any idea how much that will bring in? Well, scrap iron is about $0.16 per pound. Doing the math -> $29 million . And yet, even with iron worth next-to-nothing, if I leave a good desk/table by the street for someone to take and use... Well, the farking Mexican scrappers will come rip the legs off just for the $0.30 of iron, rendering the rest unusable. farking scrappers. |

Maybe the Captain and it's command crew will hijack it for one last mission and blow it up in off limit territories in an attempt to turn death into a fighting chance to live. |
