Asa Phelps: or they build an olympic stadium over them
sjcousins: [sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net image 403x403]So that's where the Japanese get all their monorails from.
tinfoil-hat maggie: I heard it's no worse than bananas, would you be upset by banana trees around you're playground : )
maxheck: Meh... This sounds like very low level stuff. Japan sells it's high-level waste back to the French, who refine out what fuel they can and then pay the Russians to take care of the leftovers in the way the Russians have always dealt with environmental problems... Bury it in a hole in Siberia.
bikkurikun: I think there is a reason the article doesn't even mention the radiation level of the "contaminated" soil. A bunch of citizens got paranoid, collected soil that didn't have dangerous radiation levels to begin with and buried it under a playground, where it is still not a dangerous level.
maxheck: Onkel Buck:So Japan doesnt have any hippies to stop this sort of thing? They do, but they also have experience with shutting hippies up tuit suite.
maxheck: Here in the US, we have our decommissioned military reactors arranged in trenches alongside the Columbia River. You can probably find them on Google Earth, just look up Hanford. I'm pretty sure that has more to do with SALT verification than any sane containment scheme. There's also some humongous tanks full of even the engineers don't know what there. Millions of gallons worth.Eventually, the fisheries around Seattle and Vancouver are going to get a big radioactive surprise. A few billions of tax dollars go towards keeping it all contained, and sooner or later something has to fail, whether the money or the dikes.
