Glad we've all planned ahead for this. |

![]() Somebody just decided the plot and memorable scene of Kurosawa's "Ikiru" was worth extending to future Japanese. |

| The more you eat the more you fart
Next we'll have immortal "Chernobyl Farms" brand chicken. You can cut off the parts u wanna eat, and they grow right back. |

is anyone going to question the japanese about nuclear waste? |
||
| Foxxinnia
Well I'd rather have that over a schoolgirl encased in concrete. |

What doesn't kill them makes them stronger, bigger, and candidates for special schools for mutants. |

They could use those areas as bukakke temples. |

By now the japanese ought to have developed some sort of immunity towards radiation... maybe it's part of some secret government eugenics program. |

I am honored to accept your waste. |

Just park it outside of health clubs like they did in the 80's. |

Don't worry, a guy running for Congress (who lost for the second time, this time by a larger margin) already had a similar idea. /and he's a "respected scientist" //! |

This place is a message...and part of a system of messages...pay attention to it! Sending this message was important to us. We considered ourselves to be a powerful culture. This place is not a place of honor...no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here...nothing valued is here. What is here is dangerous and repulsive to us. This message is a warning about danger. The danger is in a particular location...it increases toward a center...the center of danger is here...of a particular size and shape, and below us. The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours. The danger is to the body, and it can kill. The form of the danger is an emanation of energy. The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited. /much like Detroit |

I think there is a reason the article doesn't even mention the radiation level of the "contaminated" soil. A bunch of citizens got paranoid, collected soil that didn't have dangerous radiation levels to begin with and buried it under a playground, where it is still not a dangerous level. |

Gentlemen, let me propose the entirely unrealistic yet fundamentally more awesome engineering solution to nuclear and by definition waste in it's entirety: pack that shiat onto our newly constructed space elevator and get it the fark our of Earth orbit. USA USA USA. |

Meh... This sounds like very low level stuff. Japan sells it's high-level waste back to the French, who refine out what fuel they can and then pay the Russians to take care of the leftovers in the way the Russians have always dealt with environmental problems... Bury it in a hole in Siberia. |
||
| ShawnDoc Look, if you don't expose little boys to radiation early, they won't grow tentacles when they get older. And without tentacles, they'll never satisfy a Japanese woman and be forced to be one of those sad people who marry anime pillows. |

sjcousins: [sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net image 403x403] So that's where the Japanese get all their monorails from. Bald children don't arouse nearly as much suspicion there. |
||
| Nrokreffefp
It just sounds entirely counterproductive. They don't have enough of a birth rate to continue their culture. Why would they endanger their small population of children? |

Bury it in a hole in Siberia. Actually they have been dumping it in the Kara sea, there are at least eighteen reactor cores there and a sub so contaminated they filled it with concrete and sunk it there, unfortunately they sunk it in water so shallow they had to ram its stern several times to get it completely submerged... |

Ah, the Germans have been doing it wrong it seems. Trying to store it in barrels deep underground in a salt mine (which leaks and the barrels are in unknown condition) Wrap it in plastic and it's ok. Wonder if it is at least doublewrapped. |

Didn't know about that. Yikes! I did know about the French "closed cycle" that isn't exactly closed, given that they're fobbing the stuff off on Russia. Yeah, we have a plan for this stuff. The fact that the French are trying and having about as much success as the US in creating a "Yucca Mountain" type dump makes me wonder if they really know what they're doing. They're supposed to be the poster children for fuel recycling. |

A bunch of citizens got paranoid, collected soil that didn't have dangerous radiation levels to begin with and buried it under a playground, where it is still not a dangerous level. If that was the case, the town in TFA wouldn't have objected to a public hearing. Whenever a politician turns down an opportunity to hear himself talk...he's hiding something. |

Here in the US, we have our decommissioned military reactors arranged in trenches alongside the Columbia River. You can probably find them on Google Earth, just look up Hanford. I'm pretty sure that has more to do with SALT verification than any sane containment scheme. There's also some humongous tanks full of even the engineers don't know what there. Millions of gallons worth. Eventually, the fisheries around Seattle and Vancouver are going to get a big radioactive surprise. A few billions of tax dollars go towards keeping it all contained, and sooner or later something has to fail, whether the money or the dikes. |

So Japan doesnt have any hippies to stop this sort of thing? |

| SkunkWerks
You know, putting the whole "OMG! KIDS PLAY ON PLAYGROUNDS!" panic aside, burying radioactive waste is just about the absolute worst thing you can possibly do with it because there's no real way to monitor the stuff once it's interred. The only possible "reason" I can think of to do so is ye olde "out of sight, out of mind" edict. And yes, I'm aware- Japan has issues with real-estate. Specifically that there's a lot of people and very little real estate. I'd still like to keep my nuclear waste where I can damn well see if it's leaking or not, and not underground where the only way I'm apt to learn that it leaked is twenty years after the fact when two out of every five kids in my neighborhood is being born with some sort of fatal leukemia. Seriously, whoever came up with the idea of burying nuke waste needs a punch in the babymaker so hard that his ancestors feel it four generations back. |

This is a really good idea. How else are you going to get the anime eyes in the next generation without a little radiation? |

I'm no nuclear scientist and I'm also not being snarky....but why not just dump it in a really deep part of the ocean? |
