Well, shiat. It was fun while it lasted, everyone, but I think we all knew this day was coming. Might as well just delete our collections and deal with it, there's no way the internet can oppose the Egyptian government.

Dad's been ranting for months about how the Muslim Brotherhood took over after benevolent leader Mubarak was illegally deposed, and has been crucifying people in front of the Egyptian capitol for not being Shariah-law-practicing Muslims.

I told him it doesn't really matter. It's just pushback; the people want their freedom, such behavior might buy a few decades but they will be removed and society will collapse into an amoral mess just like America and Europe. We can have murder or we can have sex and people like having sex WAY more than they like being murdered.

It's been done...

-Ciao baby, this is Major Hit in the cockpit of the Enola McGluin, flagship of the 7th Airborne peace Corp and Lending Library. We're now over the center of rebel resistance in Northen Nigeria. And preparing to drop literature.

-Do the bomb bay door thing.

-Bomb bay doors swinging and open baby

-Groovy and out. Bombardier, it's your karma.

-We're almost ready to drop it. I can see the entire rebel force running out of their huts looking up at the sky.

-Target ready. Books away!

-There they go, the literature is in a tight pattern. The rebels are beginning to scatter but it's too late. On target. God this is an awesome moment. The last stronghold of unhip resistance is out of sight. Under 8 million hardbound copies of the Naked Lunch. It's all over, we're coming home!

It's getting worse there. It gets worse before it gets better.

Remember when the Catholics and Jews were murdering people for having sex or being immodest or believing the Earth orbited the Sun? And then people stopped doing that, so the crazy ones put together an army and had a holy war and murdered a bunch of people? And then 200 years of going up and down ended in people deciding to have a lot of sex and stop going to church so much and DEFINITELY not let priests have swords?

Well it's like that, but with external pressure too.

Ne amount of attacks from the outside will stop the righteous and true. You can't crush good, wholesome morality and the correct way of the world by raiding with armies. Too bad the correct way of the world isn't raping and murdering women for wearing miniskirts or drinking beer; that shiat's going to get ripped apart from the inside eventually, and a little gnawing from the outside is just going to stir the pot and make shiat cook faster.

In any case, it can't slide backwards. It'll eventually break out into a run. I don't want to sound like a progressive socialist, but honestly society progresses. It progresses away from living in fear and from having natural urges suppressed. Progressive socialists like to claim that society progresses towards love and brotherhood and gooshy feelings and so we should have social welfare; those are called 'noble causes' and they're hard to get right and never eliminate 100% of the ugly part of society. A proper society progresses towards diminishing the ugly side--both in breadth and severity--which means it progresses towards that rule of law which gives stability and security but progresses away from rule of law which instills fear and eliminates security.

Regressive, backwards societies where we murder people for not fitting in with our ideals rather than for the egregious harm they do to all of us do not hold. Eventually people realize they're constantly afflicted with impulse and desire that terrifies them only because someone else will kill them for those desires--that realization brings people to direct hostility towards those such leaders who will kill them, so that they can then be safe.

An individual does this every day, but is weak and afraid to form a group for fear of punishment. Eventually sympathetic social bonds form revolutionist groups. And so it ends.

That kind of makes my point even stronger, doesn't it? Iran is not a democracy, they have gone 33 years since they decided to eschew what freedoms they once had. If the initial poster's point was correct then we should expect that Iranians would want more freedoms "within a few decades." So far they have seemed happy to bow down to their Satanic leader.

That's simply not true. What of the Middle Ages? The Romans had hot and cold water piped into their homes way back in the day. People were free to an extent that had been unprecedented since the rise of civilization. And yet, Christians rolled all of that back and retarded the growth of humanity by nigh on a millenium.

We have also seen this in the Arab world. When the Christians were ruining Europe, the Muslims were keeping things like math and literature alive. The Moors were translating philosophy into different languages, advancing medicine, etc. And yet now when you think of Muslims you probably think of people who beat their children and murder little girls for the crime of wanting to learn to read.

Your view that society progresses is only potentially true if you evoke the law of large numbers- meaning that perhaps every 5000 years or so we are almost certain to have "progressed" from 5000 years prior. But if you go century to century it's remarkably simple to show society slide back into the darkness, like we saw with the Christian nations during the Middle Ages and the Muslim nations over the past couple hundred years.

You realize they weren't a democracy before the rvolution, right?

Would you call the green revolution "happy"? The fact is that many of the young don't like what is going on. But with the fear of the "great satan" it is tough to really fight back, and any action by the "great satan" enternches them more.

What I am getting at is if they don't like it in Egypt they can vote to change it. Not so for Iran.

The fall of the ROman EMpire and the dark ages were because of Chirstians? Really? They did shiat that slowed down progress, but you can't pin the fall of rome on them. As far as "free" under rome, you might want to look at the number of slaves.

I believe that you are confusing the two terms, "freedom" and "democracy." Once you realize that unlike you, I do not see the two as one and the same you will see that your suggestions that somehow I'm insinuating that the Shah led a democracy are a strawman at best.

Seriously, untangle the words "freedom" and "democracy" in your head, then re-read the posts as they were written.

// Oh and as for a society not being free because there were slaves, that's hardly a valid point of any type. There is slavery today, does that mean that there are no freedoms for anyone on Earth? (Answer: no)

No I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. They didn;t have "freedom" under the Shah. It was pretty brutal. The fact that it wasn't a religious based restreiction doesn't make it nay more free.

The egyptians, as a whole, are choosing this path, under a democracy they can just as easily change it. Not so with Iran.

Leeds: // Oh and as for a society not being free because there were slaves, that's hardly a valid point of any type. There is slavery today, does that mean that there are no freedoms for anyone on Earth? (Answer: no)

That would be a great point if I was arguing it was some type of binary test where one slave meant it wasn't free, you can pretty clearly see I didn't do that. I pointed out it was stupid to cheer them for the level of freedom they had given the number of slaves (hence why I said check out the number of slaves).
