Tucson's January 8th gunman Jared Loughner sentenced to life in prison, followed by life in prison, then life in prison, life in prison, life in prison, life in prison, one more life in prison, and finally another 140 years. Sounds about right

Just be glad he's not an Israeli commando. He could end up in prison for 13,000 years!

That's fine. A lunatic like him should never see the light of day again.

Because People in power are Stupid: Thanks tea party!

I won't say that rhetoric can't lead to things like this, but we're talking about a guy who is obviously off his rocker. That may have provided him with a direction to aim his crazy train in, but if it wasn't that, it would likely have been something else.

Depends on the crime. Under federal law you normally get a quantity discount for multiple crimes. When the sentencing guideline goes off the chart (Madoff) the judge is encouraged to make all the sentences consecutive. When life sentences are involved (this case) it doesn't matter.

quote from Gifford's husband:Giffords stood by her husband, Mark Kelly, as he addressed the shooter: "Mr. Loughner, pay close attention to this: Though you are mentally ill, you are responsible for the death and hurt you inflicted upon all of us on January 8 of last year. You know this. Gabby and I know this. Everyone in this courtroom knows this.
"You have decades upon decades to contemplate what you did. But after today, after this moment, here and now, Gabby and I are done thinking about you."

Props to the hubby; I think I would have just went with FU you lunatic, but it was open court.

He pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty. That also waived all further appeals and any option for an insanity plea. He saved the government a hell of a lot of money.

The same people that would pay for appeals were he not.

/Appeals which are in place for situations that aren't, you know, as necessarily clear cut.
//See: All the convicted murders from Texas that have been found out to have been *innocent*, etc in the past few years. While Loughner's not innocent, the system exists for a reason.

Did you really mean consecutive - one sentence served at a time, or concurrent - all sentences served at the same time?

As for the multiple life sentences, my understanding is that it matters for things like parole hearings - after all it didn't take 'w/o possibility of parole' on there.

In this state we have elected officials so feckless in their leadership that they would say, as in the case of Governor Jan Brewer, "I don't think it has anything to do with the size of the magazine or the caliber of the gun." She went on and said, "Even if the shooter's weapon had held fewer bullets, he'd have another gun, maybe. He could have three guns in his pocket" - she said this just one week after a high capacity magazine allowed you to kill six and wound 19 others, before being wrestled to the ground while attempting to reload.

/golf clap..finally someone in Government with some farking sense about gun control. If i lived there i would vote for her. Crazy is crazy, and the guns have absolutely nothing to do with what happened beyond being a means to an end. He could have just as well run his car up to 100 mph and plowed it into a crowd of nuns and orphans. You going to debate outlawing cars? The actual debate this has brought is more about mental health issues...and how we can help those with them before they go bugshiat and kill innocent people. You cannot be denied buying a weapon unless you have been in a institute x amount of years ago, or are a felon. (like felons are going to try to buy a weapon the legal way). Sadly, there is almost no way to spot someone who is capable of this kind of act..you might think looking at some guy "wow..that dude is kinda off", but odds are he's not going to gun people down like bowling pins, he's just weird. It's impossible to point people out who are going to do this shiat, there is no way. All we can do is look at how people act, and most times its too late to stop someone like this.

Naw, we're not going to stop blaming the people who actually DID influence him because you think in an alternate universe something else would have set him off. You don't know that. What we DO know is that the vitriol and hatred spewed by the Tea Party was a contributing factor to this tragedy.

A young person in jail for that long is such a waste of tax money. Just put him to death now and be done with it. I don't give a shiat if he's crazy. And don't farking dare tell me he might be innocent and we should wait decades for new evidence to pop up.

/the libs won't allow us to just end this piece of shiat. And there is a valid argument about "he suffers in jail longer, if we were to kill him..he gets off easy". I can see merit on both sides of the fence. Granted, if it was my kid that was killed i would want to shoot him myself, and would, if they let me.
