I do agree with TommyymmoY, though. This is pathetic.

Oddly enough, after the murder of Jessica Ridgeway I noticed there were a lot more reports of attempted abductions on the news than usual and that was even after they caught the guy.

It made me wonder if attempted abductions usually don't get reported or if these attempted abductions were not really attempted abductions.

If the guy was just making sure his door was shut properly, you'd think he would have just opened it and then quickly shut it and the drove on and it would have been obvious he was just making sure his door was shut. OTOH pulling over in front of a school bus stop and opening your door to see if a child hops into your car seems like a pretty lame attempt at an abduction.

Did the guy think the kid would mistake his Honda for a school bus?

I was about to say, "especially your driver's side door. Where's the child going to sit, your lap?" But then I realized that' kind of the point

Here's a story from a few years back -
We were fostering a dog with a free spirit, a Mastiff that loved children. We have none.
He would take it upon himself to wander.
One day I noticed he had gone wandering and panicked. I saw some of the neighbor kids that knew him walking by and enlisted their help.
I was a former Montessori sub and was comfortable dealing, with kids.
I put one of the kids in the car and promised the other ones 5 bucks if they could help me find him.
When we got him back I gave them all 5 dollars and some leftover Halloween candy and thanked them all.
Mr.S. told me if I had been male I would be arrested. I guess so and it is a sad statement about society.

Pretty much this.

Gimme a farking break! Yes, you need to be aware of what's going on around you. If someone approaches you that you don't know, you need to be aware and able to get away if that person proves to be a threat. HOWEVER, you do NOT need to run from someone who stops near you, does nothing to you, and had absolutely no interaction with you. WTF people!?!?!?

Yup, it's why polls are consistently saying that if men were to see a child in trouble/hurt/alone on the street they wouldn't stop to help.

Social anaphalaxis probably caused my innumeracy. Its crazy, I got a flat down the block from an elementary in the city and a house in the 'burbs down the street from an elementary. When the school in the 'burbs lets out, there are a hundredish (not exaggerating) SUVs idling around it. Crazy.

The child reported that he was at his bus stop in the vicinity of Brown Road in East Fishkill when a gray car pulled over. The driver, described only as a white male, opened his driver's side car door.

We all know it was the kids uncle who wanted to tear apart his little bunghole, every family has that molester uncle, maybe he just might of seen one or two episodes of chris hansen on dateline and decided the bus stop was a trap?
Its possible this is all a big misunderstanding, kids to stupid to know lefty loosey tighty righty, its all possible it wasn't a honda but the candy van. The Kid did report he could see the drivers hand, in all probable the driver probably was not jerking off or thinking about sharp knees, instead he was grabbing for another heineken. We should reward this guy with a gold star, he did pull over before opening up another beer, its called being responsible.

If they suggested that it might have a brown or black person then this would have gone top ten in the media charts - mommy's interviews given the vocoder treatment and released on iTunes.

Somewhere in Hopewell Junction is a guy who stopped for 2 seconds to pull out the corner of his jacket which had gotten shut in his car door when he first closed it. He's wondering if he told his story to the police clear this up he might get investigated as a potential child rapist anyway.

...and we know he would.

As a child, I received the usual lectures about not accepting rides from strangers. Once, one time only, as I was walking home from school (uphill of course) a car pulled up beside me. A person I didn't recognize said that she was a friend of my mother, and offered to give me a ride home. Like a good little boy I politely declined, they drove off, and I resumed walking.

When I got home, those same people were in the living room having a cup of tea with my mother.

I once saw a girl crying uncontrollably on a sidewalk and pulled over to ask if she needed help. She said that her mom had been yelling at her or something similar. I wasn't sure if she had been injured so I was just making sure everything was ok. I doubt I would have the same kind of worry in todays paranoid climate but you would think that would be the right thing to do in a perfect world.

Wow...

This is the result when you have a news media who only reports the bad stuff. I don't mean the age old saying "The news never reports good news, only the bad news." I mean the news reports designed to make it sound like the typical stranger is going to shoot your dog, rape your father and kidnap your children and sell them to Disney kind of reports.

This should never have been reported. White male opens his car door, never gets out, drives off. Let's assume it was going to be the absolute worst possible case instead of something like he opened up his door because there was a bee in the car and he didn't want to get stung.

I really hope there isn't a follow up where the man is found, questioned and has to register as a sex offender because he possibly maybe could have done something.

Unintended consequence is there may be more women wondering why they can't get a date, because more men may be completely paranoid of doing or saying anything within earshot of a woman out of fear of arrest. I know if it gets much worse in our land, I won't be doing much talking to anyone.

FTA "There was no exchange of any kind made," Keefe said. "The child did the smart thing, which was practice caution by getting out of there and going home. All he saw was the driver's hand which is why he know's he's a white male."

Every time I think back to things I would have done as a child and apply them to a FARK thread it gets me in trouble, but...

Is it possible this kid just missed the bus despite being dropped there and needed to make up a story to explain his whereabouts? Maybe he had a spelling test he hadn't studied for? The kid was able to tell GENDER from a hand? I also like the descriptive "grey car" description.

Sounds like something I would have thought my mom would have bought, something that would have scared her so she wouldnt be mad at me, but not something I thought she would call the cops over. She WOULD have, but I, being young and stupid, would have not thought that it was that big of a deal.

/ As I get older, I realize I was a bit untrustworthy as a kid.... maybe that was just me, but I doubt it.

The worse part is the vast majority of people, including men, are fundamentally good. 99% of men would help your child in distress, but for legitimate fears of this shiat. Only a vanishing minority want to fark your ugly kids.

Similar thing happened to me around 2nd or 3rd grade sorta. Difference was I was with my friend who couldn't figure out why I didn't want to get in a stranger's car. She wasn't a stranger, she was his mom. If I remember right, I got in the car and she drove us to my house and introduced herself to my family and good times were had by all. Or that might have been how I ended up spending 10 years in that basement dungeon. Six one way, half a dozen the other.

A little of both, I think. There's a lot of hysterical overreaction, sure, but just in my own family I know of two abduction attempts, one of which was successful.

When my mother was a young woman, she was abducted, raped and stabbed, but lived. I'm not sure if she reported it or not, it's not a story she's ever given me many details about.

When I was 17, I had the classic "hey, you want a ride?" guy pull up when I was out walking. I declined, and he drove off, but then came back around the block and opened his door and reached for me like he was trying to grab me. I took off running through the grounds of a nearby apartment complex and he didn't follow. I never reported it, in part because I didn't feel I could have given a good description, and in part because I knew it would have sent my mother into an absolute panic if she found out. I probably should have anyway, in hindsight, but I was young and terrified.

For THIS I used up one of my ten free stories on the Poughkeepsie Journal website?

This article is an offense to society and an offense to journalism.

Everyone agrees that the man did not even come close to committing a criminal act, but that doesn't stop our intrepid reporter, Nina Schutzman, from describing him and his vehicle as accurately as possible, as if encouraging citizens to report any sightings of gray Hondas to the local police. We're even given enough detail that anybody familiar with the neighborhood could probably guess who the kid is (he lives near a particular bus stop and his dad drives a Honda).

In my opinion, the real criminals in this case are the writer and editor who let such badly written sentences as this see the light of day:

Police say a child at the bus stop who left when the man stopped, and his mother came into the station to report the issue.

Just pathetic.

Another example of the fear mongering in the media. For example, it's like if there's an attractive woman on the sidewalk and you stop to ask for directions or whatever that you'd be arrested for soliciting prostitution, when you were doing no such thing.

Now, for me? I would actually be soliciting her for prostitution, so maybe that's not the best example. But you wouldn't be so that's fear mongering. That's my theory at least.
