That scene in Elfen Lied pretty much ruined it for me too. I kept on watching just to see if it was going to make sense in the long run (and... erm... it sort of maybe in a way if you look at it sideways does... sort of... stupidly.), but years later it's about the only thing beyond the horns that I can remember about the show since it was so jarring.
