When I was 13, I was involved in a Baptist version of scouts. A young woman who was a baptist missionary came to speak to our group. She had been pulled out of Africa and put on prison detail. Baptist missionaries used to distribute condoms and teach people how to use them. That was one of her responsibilities in Africa. She had a face-to-face encounter with a nun who had been telling people that using condoms was a sin against G-d and that they would burn in hell if they used the condoms. Young Baptist woman lost her self-control and slapped the nun in the face. So, she was removed from an area with incredibly high birth rates and a great deal of poverty and hunger and sent to my hometown which had multiple prisons. Even though she missed the people she'd come to know in Africa, she was a cheerful young woman and enjoyed working with the prisoners.

I wonder if Baptist missionaries still distribute condoms or if they've backed off of that in favor of avoiding controversy?
