Being a substitute teacher is very hard; I can attest to that from my personal experience as one during the year before I started teaching full time.

Good lord.

This is why you have to immediately kill the alpha male to establish dominance.

Every student will try to see how far they can push you, can you imagine having to go through this once per week.

I'm not arguing that at all. I'm sure it's incredibly difficult.

I was reacting to the misspelling the headline of his article and his comment about being a full time teacher. I hope he isn't an English teacher.

I work as a substitute. It's only a hard job if you suck at it.

Not to be obtuse, but I wonder who cosined his teaching certificate. The students' story seems to be closer to parallel with the facts at hand.

I was a substitute when I was a 22-year-old man. The problem was I looked like a 15-year-old boy . One of the school's mouth breating tough guys decided to pick on the new kid and stuffed me into a locker. It was funny to watch this behemoth start crying when one of his friends let him know I was a teacher. I grabbed his arm and marched him to the office. I had very few problems after that, because he decided he was now my personal bodyguard.

Dear Lord, that was 28 years ago!!! That kid is now one of my closest friends.

I've been a substitute teacher for 12 ½ years, moslty in middle school, so I'm getting a kick out of this....

Seriously, you have to pick your battles. Kid walks in 10 minutes late, w/o a pass, just right it up and let the admins handle it. A kid gets disruptive, send him or her to the office and follow up with a call down there to make sure he or she actually showed up and is not just hiding out in a restroom for the rest of the period.

I'm big enough (6'4", 280 lbs) that most kids won't try to get physical and so far, none have. However, if you are smart about it, even if you aren't big, you should be able to control most classrooms.

It's legal to carry a WWI trench knife in Missouri? The states where I've lived all classed that weapon as illegal brass knuckles rather than a legal knife.

You can carry it regardless of it being illegal or not if you want to. You just get in trouble when you're caught with it.

Well, education majors have the lowest high school grades and standardized test scores of all majors, after all. Is it any surprise that Johnny Can't Read?

(especially considering the fact that this middle school requires its students to go through metal detectors before entering the building).

Really? What are they looking for? Golf clubs? Google map it. They surround the place.
