Ooh-rah leathernecks!

The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!

I was in the Corps, 1997-2001. Non-rec'd for re-enlistment because I was diagnosed with a sleep disorder. 9/11 happens, joined the National Guard so I could get deployed anyway. Between the two... the Marine Corps easily has the better training, the better camaraderie, no sense of property. I miss it.

East or West coast? If East, try to get into Third Battalion. First battalion is known for their test scores, Second battalion is known for the drill field and being nasty, Third battalion is back away from the public eye so they're freer to smack you around. And they're known for better physical training. Of course. And Fourth battalion easily has the better looking Marines.

Then I recommend that on your first day of boot camp, you make sure to call your DI a soldier. I'd also call him "Sarge", and point out that he doesn't rate being called "Sir". They love that.

Plans for NROTC, with a backup of delayed enlistment. Midwesterner so I have no idea. My brother went West Coast before his dumb ass got honorably discharged after Basic.

Heh... I'll never forget standing on line for hygiene inspection... Senior drill instructor says "you got nose hair, then pulls out tweezers and proceeds to pluck then out... Eyes watering, standing there, didn't DARE break attention... THAT was pure hell.

Jesus Christ, It's been 12 years since my first Marine Corps Birthday with me in the Corps. I was at MCT at the time, and they ruck marched us back 15 or so miles so we could enjoy birthday cake. All birthdays after that involved considerably more alcohol. Happy Birthday Marines!

I don't recall talking in the chow hall. I do remember having to go to 3rd battalion's chowhall while I was maintenance during mess and maintenance week, and being allowed to have 2 pieces of cake. Talk about a WTF moment.

The only time I ever heard Sarge in the Army was from one Sergeant to another. Usually in the form of Hey big Sarge. Kind of like the way highspeed is used not as a compliment but as an attention getter.

Must've been in an alternate universe. We didn't get anything that had sugar in it. Aside from fruit juice. And god help you if you even so much as looked at the coffee. I never even saw cake there.

"The man who will go where his colors go without asking, who will fight a phantom foe in a jungle or a mountain range, and who will suffer and die; in the midst of incredible hardship, without complaint, is still what he has always been, from Imperial Rome to sceptered Britain to democratic America. He is the stuff of which legends are made. His pride is his colors and his regiment, his training hard and thorough and coldly realistic, to fit him for what he must face, and his obedience is to his orders. As a legionnaire, he held the gates of civilization for the classical world...today he is called United States Marine."
LTCOL FEHRENBACH, USA, in "This Kind of War"

Don't forget the origin legend of the term Devil Dog (Teufel Hunden)

I always wonder if those stories were true.

According to the Wikipedia entry on Devil Dog, it sounds like it's not.

Anyway, I never liked being called a devil dog. It only happened when some senior SNCO apperated out of no where to correct whatever it was you were doing. It almost always had a negative connotation in my experience.

Good times.
