If it took anyone more than 1/10th of a second to figure out what was going on as soon as it was clear which direction the bubbles were flowing, then I have to say, that person is clearly not the highest wattage LED.

I think the writer was being a little tongue-in-cheek. Maybe too subtle to catch, but my read was that he was basically saying the same thing everyone in this thread is saying: that it's fairly easy to figure out and there are silly people on the internet who didn't catch it right away. By pretending that there's some big mystery, he's calling attention to the fact that there shouldn't be, and he's goofing on the folks who didn't see it immediately. He probably should have used a sarcastrophe.

It could have been pure Oxygen but unlikely. Most probably just air. But either way the bubbles would not be effected by the cold.

The one thing that would have messed up people... if they had used re-breathers instead of regular SCUBA gear... that would have been sweet.
