...but I live in the middle of a city with a pub on every street, sometimes two or three on the same street. I could die of alcohol poisoning before I've had one pint in every pub in a 5 mile radius. Heck, maybe even 1 mile radius would do it. This needs further research. I'm going to go on a 1 mile pub crawl radius. Hmm, maybe the article is right. |

| Nezorf Convenience makes things easier to access? Sounds like all those studies that I've seen regarding fast food and obesity. Also, you can take my 3 bars within 7 blocks from my cold dead hands. |

Then how do you explain Wisconsin? |
||
| JasonOfOrillia My drinking has definitely gone up ever since this great, little pub opened up two blocks from me. I'm happier too. |

| badhatharry The closer you live to a pub also lowers your chances of being arrested for drunk driving. |

So correlation and causation went to a bar . . . |

I've got about a dozen bars within a half mile of my place, so I'm getting a kick... /hair of the dog |

AliceBToklasLives: So correlation and causation went to a bar . . . And the bar tender asks "Are you two related?" So correlation responds "Hey, what are you implying?"... |

| KrispyKritter Growing up quite close to a bar i regularly saw discarded empties & six packs on neighbors lawns and people cheating on their spouses who would park on our block and look guilty as sin as they hopped into someone else's spouses car & drive away. When i was a young adult with an apartment way too close to a pub i had to endure hearing Meatloaf's two big hits played on their jukebox in the AM hours night after night, fifteen years after Meatloaf was getting big radio play. |

| Nina Haagen Dazs Flragnararch: Then how do you explain Wisconsin? I live in Wisconsin. There's a bar about two blocks from me and four more within a mile. Haven't been in any of them in at least 15 months. Drinking at home is better, cheaper and safer. |

The more beer you drink, the more likely you are to become a heavy drinker. Stay slim, my friends. Drink hard liquor. |
||
| buzzcut73 badhatharry: The closer you live to a pub also lowers your chances of being arrested for drunk driving. The prohibitionists, led by MADD, have really screwed that up for everybody. Even in newer mixed-use neighborhoods, you rarely if ever see a bar because they'll throw up all kinds of blocks to a liquor license anywhere near a residential area, because FOR THE CHILDREN or something. I'm not sure if they're worried that kids are going to go have a few at the tavern or what. Basically, what I'm saying is that I like neighborhood watering holes, and it absolutely cuts down on drunk driving. |
||
| Pribar Hey I am NOT a heavy drinker NOTHING I drink weighs more than two pounds. /ok maybe the wine boxes weigh more but since I use a IV on them it technically doesn't count as "drinking" |

From TFA 'Heavy drinking' meant more than 10 ounces of distilled alcohol a week for men, and about seven ounces a week for women. So...a shot or so a day makes you a problem drinker? Those Finns are lightweights. |

I used to have a bar less than 50 feet from my front door. I completely agree with the results of this study...and miss my old apartment. It took me forever to buy a house because I considered the bar an "amenity". |

That being said I'm guessing you don't have a separate environmental system for you guest room to control not only temperature but also humidity. | dopekitty74 Bar, no. Liquor store, oh hell yes! /cheap |

| pxlboy Obvious headline is obvious. When I had two bars within a block of my apartment, I drank an awful lot more. |

Spent half my adult life living 3 blocks from Merlin's Rest in S. Minneapolis. I'd go have a couple pints on kilt night, (got one for free while wearing my kilt) but that was it, unless I had leftovers from a party. Now I go to O'Donovan's just across from First Ave for karaoke on Sunday nights, and I have to drive for that, so yea, I drink a few less pints, but I have a lot of home-made 'apple pie' in my cabinets, now. Study is bunk. |

The UK has a tradition of most drinking being done in pubs and most people having a "local" that is within walking distance. I can easily imagine heavy drinkers moving in order to be near a pub that they can safely stumble home from and not worry about drunk driving. I wonder what a map of the US would look like that showed those areas with a bar within 3000 feet. On the other hand this issue is could be moot in western states where people drive even when they could walk. I've lived in LA and the song "Nobody walks in LA" is basically true except for the poor. From Where The Buffalo Roamed - How Far Can You Get From McDonald's? is a map that is supposed to show the distance to the nearest McDonalds. I looking for something like this that instead shows which areas are withing walking distance of a McDonalds or bar. |

from The Beer Belly of America , here is a map of where bars (red) outnumber grocery stores (yellow). However no indication of walkability. |

Maybe I should get a kilt and some bagpipes and get two free beers... |

| DON.MAC That study was done in Finland? Out of the 5 Finnish women I know, two of them drink vodka the way I drink wine. They are also all very skinny girls so they don't have weight helping with absorption. The light drinker and I will go though half a bottle of Glenmorangie in a typical night. I don't think the distance to the bar has anything to do with any of their drinking consumption rates. |

i have a dozen or two bars in walking distance, but don't seem to go to them much... i'm a heavy drinker, and while i've kind of failed as a researcher (quantum physics), i derive plenty of satisfaction from other things, and as soon as i get my ole cash flow in order, i think i'll be able to hit up those bars... |

Or maybe... JUST MAYBE... heavy drinkers move close to bars on purpose. Maybe. I'm not a scientist like these guys. |
