Probably still safer than Juarez.

Not that I can remember at 3AM after too many beers, but I'm pretty sure that was the figure a decade ago when I lived there.

Since I left (in 2004) Brazil has made tremendous strides in expanding the middle class and education. However, it still has some major corruption/crime issues.

IIRC, the class divide was beyond day/night there. You can literally find a mansion built right next door to a shack there. Instead of living in a gated community, the rich high gates with very high security right in the middle of everyone else.

Since we're posting Brazilian awesomeness that's not limited to just eye candy...

I went through a period where I went to those websites like rotten.com that shows some pretty awful stuff (don't judge) and Brazil by FAR had the most gruesome murders ever. It's like anarchy there, people gutted by machetes in the street, tied up and skinned alive, just horribly brutal stuff.
Every since, Brazil has been on my list of 'never going there' places.

This is one of those times a militarized police force should be put into effect. Just kill any dissident until things become manageable. Is it a particular good or elegant solution? No. Would it work if the military grew some balls? Sure.
