Yes, because our division of the year into 52 weeks (plus a handful of days, plus the 1/4 of a day for leap year) is underlain by the precision of the metric system. Truly, you have exposed Britain as the island of fools we all knew it to be.

10 people per day x 49 days = 490 people

982 + 490 =1470

Another year, another bloody quota met.

Caracas has a much much higher:

"The Venezuela Violence Observatory says at least 19,336 people have been killed this year, an average of 53 a day.

The figures suggest Venezuela's murder rate is the highest in South America and four times that of Mexico."

TFA doesn't say, but it's worse than the USA. 10*365*315M/20M=57487. About 3 times worse than the estimate of 18,000 murders in the USA in 2011.
/where USA population is 315M and metro São Paolo is 20M.

Not that I can remember at 3AM after too many beers, but I'm pretty sure that was the figure a decade ago when I lived there.

Since I left (in 2004) Brazil has made tremendous strides in expanding the middle class and education. However, it still has some major corruption/crime issues.

IIRC, the class divide was beyond day/night there. You can literally find a mansion built right next door to a shack there. Instead of living in a gated community, the rich high gates with very high security right in the middle of everyone else.

/got used to seeing murder in the daily paper

I went through a period where I went to those websites like rotten.com that shows some pretty awful stuff (don't judge) and Brazil by FAR had the most gruesome murders ever. It's like anarchy there, people gutted by machetes in the street, tied up and skinned alive, just horribly brutal stuff.
Every since, Brazil has been on my list of 'never going there' places.

This is one of those times a militarized police force should be put into effect. Just kill any dissident until things become manageable. Is it a particular good or elegant solution? No. Would it work if the military grew some balls? Sure.

Yea, I'd imagine there's active war zones that are safer than Brazil at this point.

What the hell are you ranting about? The week thing is obviously just a religious relic, along with the day names. It has nothing to do with measurement.

The 1/4 day is because, now get this, the rate our planet spins around isn't locked evenly to the rate it flies around the sun. It's a little off. By about a day every four years and a little fiddling past that.

It has nothing to do with units of measurement whatsoever.

Not to mention that in every revolution around its axis, the Earth experiences simultaneously 4 24-hour days.
