"To judge credibility, the fact-checkers must be regarded as credible judges. But each time they are pulled into a scuffle with politicians, they can look more like political actors to the public - an assumption that especially benefits those politicians who lie with the greatest abandon."

Brilliant. So just lie more.

Dead for Tax Reasons: We are not going to let our campaign be dictated by reality-checkers

I can easily see them thinking and saying that in campaign strategy sessions. But it takes a unique type of stupid (or testicles) to say that to the press.

Liberals only care about facts. So if a Conservative Politician lies, that is expected and the Liberals won't vote for them anyways. Conservative voters on the other hand think that everything a Liberal politician does is lie regardless of the facts.

So you have the conditions where it doesn't matter if politicians tell the truth.

Why is the liberal media calling the GOP liars more than Dems? They must be in the bag for the democrats, it can't possibly be that the GOP lies more, because both sides are bad.

Cognitive dissonance will ultimately reach critical mass, and their beliefs will become the only reality by subsuming the actual one.

There are no repercussions. If you call out a politician for lying, their followers either shrug it off or scream at you for being part of the liberal media.

Because their phone never rings or they are never mobbed while leaving their office by concerned citizens like me, you, and our friends/family. We are fat cats who are fine with everything provided Dancing With the Stars and Monday Night Football are not interrupted.

If I were a politician, it would take me a month to be a crooked maniac because I'd do a favor for a friend and nobody would ever call me on my bullshiat. And then I'd step it up.

Perhaps if somebody ever received negative feedback for lying in pursuit of public office. Prison time, soap mouths, and cockpunches come to mind.

Both sides have opinions that are equally valid. If one side says 1+1=2 and the other says 1+1=4, well, darn it, the truth is that 1+1=3. If you say anything other than that you are a shameless partisan tool and can't be trusted as a fact checker and we will defund your little radio station.

Fact checking won't work because political "groupies" care more about slamming the candidate they are against than anything else in the world. Period.

It's part of what's broken about politics today: You can't have (don't want?) a debate on ideas or qualifications - you just want to say "Don't vote for the other guy - he sucks!"

No need for 'stupid', the mainstream press did an atrocious job of investigative journalism. Today's press see their role as reporting on the controversy around falsehoods instead of directly confirming or investigating statements. From the perspective of process they're little better than TMZ. My smartphone is a better source of direct information.

Fewer people than ever pick a candidate. They've chosen a party and will vote Satan if nominated. Thus they rationalize away the "fact checkers" as mere spinmeisters from the opposition party.

No need for a politician to worry much...

I'm as libby lib as they come, but liberals are also prone to buy into ideas that are argued on half truths simply to support what they want to believe. I don't mean to equivocate because it is much much worse on the Republican side of the fence. However I see economic stats all the time that are cherry picked to make an argument. There really isn't a need though as there is a solid argument to counter nearly ever current idea the GOP supports.

If politicians had to actually acknowledge what they said previously and admit it wasn't true then Obama wouldn't have had any time to talk about anything else. Romney might have been able to work something in now and then.

Romney buried us with so many lies and outright reversals of position (which he denied every time) that the media and the fact checkers didn't have the time and resources to confront them all. Lying was his strategy. And it failed.

Probably because for large segments of BOTH PARTIES reality has become more of a philosophical belief and truth is not considered all that relevant. Take a look at Rove and his refusal to accept what statisticians were saying (85%+ chance Fartbongo wins) and his ability to just write this off as a librul conspiracy. When you are willing to wear blinders the whole true false equation goes out the window.

It is brilliant. Person calls out the lie, gets another lie in response. Generally the person will then have to disengage in order to research the point and conclude with certainty that it was also a lie. He spends a great deal more time and effort falsifying statements than the liar does just making them up on the spot. And meanwhile, the people who were present during the exchange leave with the expectation that the new statement was also true, until proven false - the proof of which may not always get back to the individuals present at the time.

Like kicking over a house of cards, only it is the liar who's doing the kicking.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."

When you're talking about lies, it's America's inability to confront the big one that has left us all in the Twilight Zone.
I'm referring to the invasion of Iraq.
From the Republicans who crafted it to the Democrats who supported it for political expediency to the news media who promoted it with all the glitz "shock-and-awe" glamor and unquestioning embedded reporters, to all of us who re-elected George W. Bush, we've all got the burden of thousands of dead American soldiers and tens of thousands of dead innocent Iraqis to answer for.
Until we do that as a society, lies will prevail.

True, looking at the country as a single entity the race was close but sticking your head in the sand and only considering the nationwide vote is naive at best.
