Wow, something scary happened and made world news. Of course, now they'll have to pass laws making it harder for circuses to obtain lions, making them get insurance and pay higher registration fees, etc. /way to go, Macedonia. |

Having no other important issues to contend with, Greece insist that the country of which Skopje is the capital be referred to as "The Fomer Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia". |

Subby phrased it correctly. It's that whole genie deliberate misinterpretation of the wish thingy. Had the word "were" been used the genie would have replied. "Granted. They were as exciting. They aren't any more but they were." |

| The One True TheDavid
Don't you meant The Former Yougoslav Republic of "Macedonia," subby? Where half the people are Albanians and the rest are Bulgars? |

Maybe the reason most greeks insist on calling it FYROM is because the name macedonia for that country only existed the last couple years because they stole it from the greeks when macedonia was part of northern greece for thousands of years. I wonder if it would be funny to call the capital of greece TEΧΑS and claim it was our name always. so Fyrom (Former yugoslav republic of Macedonia) it is |

What subby, you don't have the travelling circuses from Mexico in your part of the USA? Circo Fantastico. Haven't had my heart in my throat for awhile, but trapeeze acrobatics thirty feet above a concrete floor with no safety net did the trick. Definitely not OSHA approved. /then they did the three-motorcycles-one-girl-steel-cage trick |

Yes, Greece still has a 3 Regions w/ the name "Macedonia" in it, but the insistence of ownership of the name "Macedonia" is nothing more nationalistic Hellenic semiotics. They can call themselves New New York for all I care, I don't live there or have a voice. Intranational symbiosis between Macedonia & Greece stands for more gain then petty fighting over a name/ |

Alexander the great was a hellene spoke ancient greek and practiced hellene traditions. THe flag of macedonai of alexander the great was the star of vergina the star of vergina is in the heart of greece a city that still exists to this day, so basically the symbol of your flag is also stolen from us. i have nothing with you or the people of your nation but with the stupid politicians who believe they can steal our history to make it part of theirs. if you wanna call your country NEW MACEDONIA fine ill accept it, but macedonia? fark NO |

It would take hours of random wiki links to remember those details, and I dig history. I'm not Macedonian, I'm actually an American (last branch of the family got here during the Civil War) of Scottish decent. I'm just curious about history and geography. Most of today's (FYR)Macedonians are south Slavic linguistically (except the Albanians). Historically geographically, (FYR)Macedonia is part of what was the ancient kingdom/region of Macedonia. "New Macedonia" is not a bad term for the republic. But, I feel a more accurate compromise would be "North Macedonia". The semiotic spat can at time be seen as silly, but hey at least most (98%) of (FYR)Macedonians aren't Turks, right? (j/k, That's a discussion for another day, and I actually like secular Turks). |
