It's good that we can all come together as a community to support a Rutgers student from Mendham who is temporarily unable to access her parents' money.

Damn. Fark is farking cold today. This girl (woman, whatever) just lost both of her parents and has to take care of her brothers and sisters. Yes, it happens every day to people. Yes, it happens to people who are worse off than she is. Yes, not everyone in this situation gets 50K in donations.

But every one of these sudden parental losses is tragic, and it's mean to say her pain is so much less than someone else's because of her lucky coincidence of birth. The pain of losing both parents is still pain, and the worry about taking care of minor siblings is still worry.

Some of you need to grow up.

If only someone would have warned them that a storm was coming and it probably wasn't a good idea to be driving around for non-essential puproses.

But hey, I'm a white male with a master's degree in business accounting. Nothing bad could ever happen to me. Have fun growing up without parents kids! When you put the Father's Day card on my grave, please make sure it's addressed to irresponsible nitwit so that I'm sure to get it.

Love (maybe we shouldn't go that far),
Dad

so... that lady that was bullied on her bus pulled in over $700,000 and was able to retired, but this girl who had to quit college because a tree fell on a car and killed her parents leaving her to raise her 2 sisters only gets $50k?

Freezing.

It shows remarkable maturity and grace that she "closed" her wish even though people wanted to keep giving in order to urge them to donate to other families in need.

Folks out in the webbernets already cut this kid $50k worth of slack, so yeah... Welcome to Fark.

Such a tragedy, though... wish I had rich parents stupid enough to go DRIVING AROUND IN A FARKING HURRICANE so I could get some sweet donations to tide me over till I get access to the bank accounts, not to mention the life insurance.

$50,000.oo is indeed a small amount when divided amoung the care and feeding of 4 people, but it is a good start.

I hope she plans out a budget, and considers some investments so some of that money can keep making a little more money down the road.

She doesn't need to stretch out the $50k to survive. She asked for $5k to hold them over until the estate is sorted by the lawyers because all assets were frozen. They will be financially stable once that happens.

Subby's choice of tag is rather subtle and wicked, if intentional.

Good for her for closing the account and pointing out that there are other families that need more help than she does. Hopefully she can continue with her studies next semester.

It's called life insurance and all good parents have it.

For anyone feeling particularly nasty towards this woman..

Still got your parents? you won't one day, and regardless of how it happens, it won't be a pleasant day for you. If you're lucky, you won't have 3 siblings whose lives depend on you to keep the family together in the family home, and you wont find that the income you've been using to live off of is being disrupted.

She was handed the cards and didn't choose for any of this, except for the responsibility to her siblings. She didn't HAVE to do that. You're going to suggest she's a lesser person because her family was able to give her more prior to this event?

I feel worse knowing that she, and her siblings are not going to be able to support the lifestyle they've been accustomed to. They'll grow from all this, I'm sure, but it's going to be a lot harder for someone like that, than it would be for someone who's personally had to work hard for everything they have. The person with the harder life will spring back to their accustomed level of comfort, and possibly even surpass it relatively quickly, while this family is not likely to do that at all in the long run.

It's kinda like standing in a darkened room and suddenly stepping out into blinding sunlight, versus just being in normal lighting and the sunlight not being quite so dramatically blinding when you go outside. It's relative, and having more during the good times just means more to lose in the bad times.

Their future is full of everyone getting jobs without college degrees and paying their share to help get by, I'm sure, but with any luck the 50k might handle a chunk of whatever is left on the mortgage. Still, if they can keep the house, and use it as a springboard to get their futures going, they'll have fulfilled the role that her parents were unable to, rather than split the family into adoption services, and lose the home.

The 50k is to help cover expenses until the insurance policy clears. The family probably was well off if the daughter can go to Rutgers.

RTFA - She set up the website asking for $5000 to help them out. After just one day they received $50,000 so she closed the site even though offers kept coming. Her closing statement was that she greatly appreciated the overwhelming response, but donations should be made to everyone else who was affected by hurricane Sandy.

Yup, what a biatch.

At least her parents own(ed) a horse boarding facility (w onsite manager) so their business will continue, and therefore the kids will actually be able to stay in their home, and keep their horses, etc.

/they were driving around @ 7:30pm on that Monday, right when the winds were hitting NJ the strongest, so I'd have to say those parents would get their 'Dumbass' tag were they still here to see it...

Were you left to care for 3 younger siblings, 2 of which aren't even in middle school yet??? Probably not, and your attempt at snarky humor was 2 out of 10 at best. But troll on Fark. I hope those of you that are biatching about this story find a weiner to choke on.
