I was promised forced abortions and mandatory gay marriage. Also, no one has come to confiscate my guns. Where can I lodge a complaint? |

| jayhawk88 It's going to be fun watching the right try and keep this "We're all going to die in fire" derponomic narrative going for four years. "New home sales down 0.15% for Q1 '14.....OH GOD THIS IS IT, HUG YOUR FAMILY ONE LAST TIME AND PREPARE FOR THE GANGS OF LOOTERS!" |

anyone read the link about the states that are filing for secession? Was that a misprint or is there actually a guy at the Hardin GOP headquarters whose last name is Batman? Link /although Kent doesn't make a very good first name if that is the case. |

My prediction is nothing will come from the efforts to stop sequestration. Obama will introduce tax cuts for folks making less than $200,000 in his state of the union and the GOP will fight those tax cuts. |

| Dr Dreidel Muta: My prediction is nothing will come from the efforts to stop sequestration. Obama will introduce tax cuts for folks making less than $200,000 in his state of the union and the GOP will fight those tax cuts. The SoTU is the last week in January, 3 weeks after the new rates would expire. I think Team Obama is going to have a plan on the table long before then, and if we're still trying to hash this out in late January, someone's going to pay BIG in the midterms. I expect that by time we're finalizing our Christmas plans (I have the week off; I'll be at home doing nothing), there will be a deal in place or waiting for the votes. |

Well, the big story will be the fiscal cliff, even though Obama is going to get roughly 85% of what he wants. It'll basically be a rehash of the last deal offered before the sequestration - the10-1 cuts to taxes proposal, except the cuts will be reduced in some key Democratic-friendly areas like food stamps. Speaking of food stamps, Republicans are going to go DERPSTORM 5 about them, but they'll get a farm bill passed sooner rather than later because of the Midwest drought and coming food price hikes - especially meat and dairy. The Midwest congresscritters are still consistently red, especially in the house, but there's enough Dems in Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota to present a united front to get a farm bill through - if they decide to do it. Mike Pence and Todd Jones both retired in Indiana, however, and Joe Walsh was voted out, so maybe the tea party will lose some steam about holding up the farm bill. Now that all this is coming out about Petraeus and the NATO general in Afghanistan, expect a defense-oriented witch hunt to take all of the media attention. Any prior foreign policy stories will die, unless they can be somehow tied into sexy scandals. For that reason, you'll probably hear more about Benghazi having an extraordinary rendition detention center, but nobody will make the further connection to Guantanamo or the upcoming NDAA renewal. Drone strikes in Yemen, tacit support of the monarchy in Bahrain, continuing non-interventionist policy in Syria, Afghanistan, the Japan/China conflict over the Senkaku islands - all of these will (continue to) be ignored, unless Petraeus was banging his mistress in one of those countries. We'll get some nice saber-rattling about Iran from the right trying to save the defense budget in the fiscal cliff negotiations, however. I'm personally for us cooling it on the foreign policy front for now, so I'm not disappointed by any of this except we're still shooting people with robots and keeping them locked up. I wish that would stop, but we don't need to be world police any more. On the less-important (to the news channels anyway) issues, I expect more people to not understand what is going on with the USPS, and I definitely don't expect Congress to do anything about it, except continue giving them extensions to their missed payment deadlines. The NDAA will hardly engender the debate it did last time, except in certain circles - mostly because neither side sees anything controversial about it any more. They'll be too busy fighting over money to fight about soldiers. Somebody will probably take another run at getting some brutal copyright legislation in place - maybe the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement will see the light of day, but it's far more likely that we see another SOPA/PIPA-type bill show up again. No movement on drug laws, but SCOTUS will probably force a recategorization of pot in that upcoming case. Oh, and maybe Scalia or Kennedy dies or retires, but I doubt both. All in all, I say Obama gets roughly 75-80% of what he wants on the fiscal cliff deal, but once the lame ducks leave, Congress throws a biatch fit about healthcare and energy policy, killing whatever momentum he has. More delay and intransigence on the part of the Republicans until the midterms, at which time, the Dems pick up the 25 or so seats they need to take back the chamber. |
