| impaler Still, some older words have found new linguistic relevance. "Pleb," taken from the Roman word "plebs," has found a modern context in its derogatory usage to describe "a member of the ordinary people or working classes." Using 'pleb' is so hoi polloi. |
||
| Lord Jubjub omnishambles I gotta remember that word. We used the phrase Charlie Foxtrot in the army. |

Now if the computer world would just come up with a 1-click button solution to create a gif of variable sizes/quality out of any movie clip. |

GILF has a better ring to it. /seriously |

| ITGreen "Interestingly, the word-of the-year distinction does not guarantee that the chosen words will actually be included in future editions of the Oxford English Dictionary." Making this just one more meaningless publicity stunt. |

Since, you know, that's what it stands for. |

So question for those of who are cooler and more hip than I (which would be most everyone): What happened this year to make "GIF" particularly noteworthy? Did I miss a breakthrough in 256 color animations? |

The British Oxford Dictionaries went a different route, choosing "omnishambles," as their word of the year, which is defined as "a situation that has been comprehensively mismanaged, characterized by a string of blunders and miscalculations." See also: Mitt Romney's Election Campaign |

Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: Is it pronounced with the 'g' in gin or the 'g' in gun? Oxford wimped out and refused to declare a preferred pronunciation: "GIF may be pronounced with either a soft g (as in giant) or a hard g (as in graphic). The programmers who developed the format preferred a pronunciation with a soft g (in homage to the commercial tagline of the peanut butter brand Jiff, they supposedly quipped "choosy developers choose GIF"). However, the pronunciation with a hard g is now very widespread and readily understood. Whichever pronunciation you use, it should of course be the same for both the noun and the verb." |
