"In addition to the nickel issue, the rise of uranium concentrations ... is harmful to organisms, especially to some sensitive invertebrates and algae," the institute said. People should stop uraniating in the pond. |

Toxic nickel found in Finnish Lake. Deadly dime found in Staart River. |
||
| ZAZ Actually it was the euro coin, not the dime, that had toxic nickel. Dissimilar metals + sweat = galvanic something or other = nickel release into skin. |

imtheonlylp: Toxic nickel found in Finnish Lake. Deadly dime found in Staart River. If 1980's video games taught me anything, it's a quarter to Staart. |

sp86 I will check back later to see which of you two is stupid. That would be the other person. Maybe "doesn't get jokes" would be more accurate than "stupid". Maybe. |

I was just chatting with someone the other night, saying that no yuan knows how many pounds of nickel gets taken up by local fauna, such as bhats, loons etcetera. Anyone with a yen for wildlife should be concerned for this dolorous situation. Given that it's Finland, who knows, maybe even hikers from neighboring Russia come by and add their own .ru pees to the lake. / screw it, I'm spent. |

Toxic nickel doesn't move to devastating dime. T and N aren't the same letter, while D gets used twice. You've got to move the appropriate number of letters up. So, since T is #20, and N is #14, our modifier for D (#4) has to be J (#10). Which will fail as I've not found a good word for this situation that begins with J. |

What's with the "I think I'll tuck in just this little bit of my T-shirt" look? Are they just trying to show off their awesome belt buckles handcrafted by some three-fingered mouth cancer survivor in Shiatstomper WY, or is it some pseudohipster thing? |

Maybe it's part of their genius. Write crappy songs and have a completely retarded look - but somehow hit the most profitable demographic. Fat teenage girls and cougars. |

STOP TALVIVAARA TALVIVAARA LEAK - NEWS STREAM The gypsum waste pond of Talvivaara mine started to leak on 4th-Nov-2012 and the situation is getting dramatically worse. After a short essential introduction, you can find links to latest news and resources in english: For years the local people and activists have brought up the fundamental violation of environmental legislation in case of Talvivaara: the extraction of uranium has been part of the operation of the mine from the very beginning, but uranium wasn't mentioned by a single world in Talvivaara's environmental impact assesment procedure - and there was not a single word about uranium in the environmental permit that was granted. Nevertheless Talvivaara has been allowed to extract hundreds of tonnes of uranium per year from black schist ore - since 2008.... There is much more information in both Finnish and English. Also there is a dedicated YouTube channel. From Suomen Luonnonsuojeluliitto [the NGO, I think] On Wednesday 7th November Finland's largest environmental NGO, the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation, called for government intervention in the matter. "Finland is renowned as a hi-tech country in the environment sector. However, it has not applied its abilities to mining operations: in particular there have been deficiencies in control. The Talvivaara mine has become a classic example of what can happen when environmental monitoring is left to business interests," says Executive Director Eero Yrjö-Koskinen from the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation. The Talvivaara mine has been in the news headlines in Finland for many years due to its environmental problems. Last spring one of its employees died from hydrogen sulphide poisoning in the mining area and dozens of dead waterbirds were discovered in the open pond. Dust and obnoxious odours from the mine have dispersed over a wide area, while the mine's impact on the waterway has been detected over a hundred kilometres downstream. Unfortunately Greenpeace has decided to crash the party, but perhaps this time they might actually somehow manage to be useful, instead of engaging in their usual childish AW-ing histrionics. We'll...give GP the benefit of the doubt for a while and see what comes of their efforts. |
