Man Arrested Despite Participation in Sting to Catch People Buying Stolen Goods

NOVEMBER 12--Torrance Canady, 39, was arrested last night by Florida cops and charged with grand theft in connection with ripping off two victims. Through his lawyer, Canady expressed disbelief and outrage, saying that he was participating in a police sting to catch people attempting to purchase stolen goods. The sting involved the attempted sale of Apple products such as iPads and laptop computers at outrageous discounts, such as $400 for an iPad that typically retails at $899.

Witness Felicia Bunker, 41, yesterday identified Canady as the man who last Friday sold her a fake iPad for $400. Bunker told cops that after repeatedly demanding to know if Canady was a cop, she gleefully purchased the device with cash and rushed home before the legitimate owners could find her, only to find that she had been duped.

"These people thought they were buying stolen goods," Canady's attorney said. "No one could reasonably believe that a laptop, with a sticker on the front showing its price to be $2194, would be legally sold by a guy in a van in a supermarket parking lot for $500 cash. And yet, rather than pursuing these real criminals who are the economic justification for stealing expensive goods, the police have decided to arrest my client, who did nothing other than sell wood, tape, and glass at a mutually agreed-upon price. We vow to fight these charges."
