FTFA: The fake iPad has a charging port, but no charging strip. The buttons don't work. The machine doesn't turn on, and Pereda showed us what appeared to be a fishing sinker wrapped in white tape placed where the charger should have been. |
||
| CraicBaby These stories show up every year because some people are total retards who can't fgure out that if a dude is selling iPads out of the back of his truck, it's a scam. |
||
| TheBeastOfYuccaFlats That's some real good return checking there, Lou. This is why you don't buy shiat at Wal-mart. Hell, even if it isn't a total fake, the model you're buying is usually of cheaper build than if you bought it anywhere else. |

| Lsherm It's a Wal-mart problem, and it's not limited to iPads. My local Wal-mart is so resolutely shiatty, and with such untrustworthy employees, that buying even a $5 DVD or Blu-Ray is a crapshoot as to whether or not you'll actually get the product you wanted. Here's the scam: An unscrupulous (read: criminal) employee or customer wants something that Wal-mart sells. They buy it, take it home, replace the contents of the box, re-shrink wrap it, then they return it. Wal-Mart puts it back on the shelf without ever checking the product inside the box. I think I went through a six month period where every DVD I bought from Wal-Mart was a perfectly wrapped case with no DVD inside. There are controls in place to avoid these kinds of shennanigans, especially for high ticket items, so I'd bet there's an employee on the inside validating these returns. |
||
| Elzar
Why not simply do what sane people do and buy from Amazon, Newegg or a retail store (Apple, ATT, Verizon)? Crisis avoided. |
||
| Tr0mBoNe I'll add iPad to my list of things not to buy at walmart. Socks are generally safe. |

I played with one briefly. P.S. I'm still waiting for my free gear, man. |

| mootmah step 1: buy fake iPad on the street step 2: buy real iPad at Wal-Mart step 3: return fake iPad to Wal-Mart step 4: profit |

Hell, even if it isn't a total fake, the model you're buying is usually of cheaper build than if you bought it anywhere else. I rather suspect it's an inside job rather than poor return checking. Lsherm: There are controls in place to avoid these kinds of shennanigans, especially for high ticket items, so I'd bet there's an employee on the inside validating these returns. The bad ones I've gotten from Fry's (an old product in the box, not empties or fakes) have all lacked the normal return stickers they should have. Thus I don't think it's an employee validating the returns, but rather employees simply swapping out the stuff and putting it back *WITHOUT* going through the return procedure at all. |

"Pereda's father-in-law bought the $480 white iPad as a gift for his wife's birthday, but when she opened it, they say they knew something was wrong. First of all, it wasn't white."

I think I went through a six month period where every DVD I bought from Wal-Mart was a perfectly wrapped case with no DVD inside. And you stupidly kept buying them there? I live in a rural enough area that my choices are: Wal-mart - 15 miles away Best Buy - 25 miles away and that's it. There aren't "local stores," or Target, or any other chain. And most days, that extra 20 miles round trip isn't worth it. I get most of my stuff from Amazon, the Wal-mart DVD purchases were, as designed, spur of the moment because I was already there. |

Any store selling returns as new is a scammer anyway. Don't care about their problems, if they sold it to someone and it left the store it is NOT NEW> |

That's because Wal-Fart killed your towns' businesses, yo. In an effort to save pennies. Are you proud of that, American? To save pennies, you killed local. For shame. Shame on you. Shop local and rectify your wrongs. Show Wal-Giants that the sling is still effective... *) |

Pereda says he spent all night and all day trying to get some help from Walmart, but he says he didn't hear back from the corporate office. What? Why didn't he just go back to the store to the customer service desk? Wouldn't they resolve this inside of 60 seconds (plus time standing in line)? |

Shadyman: TheBeastOfYuccaFlats: the model you're buying is usually of cheaper build than if you bought it anywhere else. This is true. It's true of many things. Some manufacturers are unwilling to debase their products to ship a few more units to Wal*Mart. Apple, for all their other sins, is among that group that won't compromise their product. |

Even if you happened to get a lazy stupid person on the service desk that doesn't check the contents of a return Walmart doesn't put returns back on the shelf. They're all shipped back to the distributor. What you most likely have going in here is someone playing switcharoo during the manufacturing or shipping process |
