I'm sure that'll work well, with cigarettes available at every convenience and drug store in the country.

Have governments not realized that creating new black markets for legal drugs just enriches criminals?

All we have to do to solve this problem is make it so you have to sign a "I will not seek free healthcare to cure my lung cancer" waiver to get a dot on your driver's license that allows you to buy cigarettes.

If that's the case, I would like to see cigarette taxes abolished or heavily reduced, considering one of the main goals pols say they are for is to pay for smoking-related health care

Yup, I think I can fit in what you are saying into my idea. Maybe just a small tax to pay for you to get a new license with the dot. One cent per pack.

Unfortunately that money is already being misspent and programs totally unrelated to smoking cessation will really miss the cash.

Why stop at smokers? Go after fat people too! You go ahead and eat that 2/3 lb burger and huge coke, but if you have a heart attack, don't expect me to pay for it!

Nationalize the health care system and charge smokers more for coverage and/or raise the out of pocket deductible for smoking-related treatments.

is there a difference between churches profiting from sin and government? Look, i do understand the issue with smoking - but before you charge down that holy road, why dont you GET RID OF the licenses required for normal items that only serve the establishment, like inhalers - how much do doctors make so that someone can be prescribed something they know they need their whole life, and is safe? That's the thing:

before you start showing us how the evil smokers should pay, why dont you show us your heart is in the right place? Other wise, there's no moral basis for this anymore than asking people who mountain bike or jay walk.

...and if you are gonna live near that refinery, because you work there and it's convenient, you know it is bad for you. So, we will tax you more because we know that working in and living near the refinery is gonna cost us all a lot more in health care to take care of your working, carcinogen butt. What line, what?!

Wow. I've never been in a fight or punched anyone in anger, but I might seriously cheap shotting that guy. Or just lighting up and exhaling directly on him repeatedly.

I'd be pretty cool with making cigs illegal, I could get by with the gum or lozenges without too much trouble. The whole black market issue is a big problem with that strategy though.

Yes, because smoking is the only stupid decision people ever make about their health, so smokers deserve a special punishment.

I am failed on my non-smoking attempts multiple times due to filling up my car and going to get milk.

Personally I think if you wish to partake in deadly activities then you need to be licenses - in smokings case, I should have to go to my doctor say I wish to have a nicotine addiction, she then does a battery of tests (to create a bench mark) then says "Sure, here is your prescription." I then go to the chemist and get the prescription filled (1000 cigs in a white .. no make that black .. box.) Each time I need a new prescription I have to go through the tests -> an incredible accurate record of my slow suicide -> better protective medications being developed.

This stands for if I wish to be a cocaine or heroin user too - imagine the wealth of info we would collect...

Well, if you're going after the fatties might as well go after the fitness freaks: tear up your knee running the triathalon? Don't expect me to pay for it! Break your arm mountain biking? Not paying for that either!

What TFA doesn't mention is that all the license fees paid over time by the smoker will be refunded with interest once s/he decides to quit. It's like a bank account for smokers, with the reward for quitting being teh munnys.

That's not the fault of the smokers who pay the tax.

Perhaps politicians should pay a monthly bureaucracy tax to offset the costs of all of their wasteful spending and mismanagement.

I'm OK with this. It's not like they don't already have to show a driver's license when they buy a pack, anyways. Just have any cashier scan the license number before the transaction, and it will tell them if they can sell to that person.

The only problem is what to do about citizens of other countries visiting here. Just refuse to sell to them?

Step 1: Quit (or don't start) smoking
Step 2: Get license
Step 3: Buy your quota of cigarettes and sell them down at the corner near subby's mom
Step 4: Profit.

Oh and don't forget dangerous jobs with high death rates. Keep in mind of course that if you have a job that involves driving, you probably have a "dangerous" job, one that's possibly deadlier than fireman or cop.

Howabout we just let smokers smoke. And fatties eat. And those of us who don't exercise as much as we should not exercise. And people who exercise TOO much and wreck their ligaments do that. And whatever. And, you know, try to make health-care, and health facts as available as possible as early as possible so more people will choose a healthier lifestyle sooner rather than later.

By the time a person gets to where this kind of thing would affect them, they're probably ALREADY thinking they smoke too much and would prefer to quit; or they've tried and can't do it without tons of help. The kids and ancillary smokers aren't going to notice it because they're not at the point of caring yet. Just like fat people don't really worry until that heart attack or stroke, or until they become aware they can't buy off-the-rack at even the fat person store. But making them pay extra for a super-mc-meal wouldn't do squat.

But pay no attention to rational thought; carry on with your excoriation of smokers and fatties.

Mostly due to 2 days off and alcohol - but I sell peeps drugs for a living and I wish there was an 'alcohol license' because I get to watch peeps die, slowly day by day. You cannot keep drinking 2 litres of port a day and not be on a downward slope. If the peep's doctor (kid or wife) put a mark on the license saying 'No' then I would luv the power to say sorry aren't you meant to be in rehab.

Let peeps do what they want - shiat even meth is ok in certain settings (nye party, bucks show... - but there comes a point where the victim needs intervention.

Imagine (as a smoker) each time you get your new prescription the doc said, "Oh you have lost another 4% of your lung capacity, still want the prescription?"

I understand and largely agree with this sentiment, except for the effects of second-hand smoking on non-smokers. That's why it makes sense to restrict smoking in public places. Otherwise, like you say, make the information available and let people do what they want.

The politicians should've be voted out for pushing another sin tax in the first place. Cigarettes were taxed too much when they were $3 a pack. But it isn't about smoking, it's about demonizing smokers and using the coughers to line the coffers.
