Why is she bringing the baby to school? How is that even allowed?

Not to mention that schools are epidemiological jacuzzis roiling with everything from influenza to colds to rampant infectious bacteria on every goddamned surface. It's not necessary to shelter babies from diseases, but there's no need to dunk them head first in viral sewage.

Pump the milk. Give the baby a bottle. Enjoy your nipple suckling when you get home.

Jeez louise, this isn't so hard.

She's not. She was requesting time during the day to pump her breast milk and for a private area to do so. Both are mandated by California law.

She could use formula. It's much more convenient, in any case.

Breast milk is better for babies than formula. And amongst other things, it's easier for the baby to digest than formula. Also, if you're breastfeeding a baby it's important to pump the milk whenever necessary when you're away from home and your baby isn't with you. This ensures an adequate milk supply

And finally, you cannot train your breasts to produce milk when it's convenient for your boss or whomever. When a woman's breasts are full of milk they will leak if you don't breastfeed your baby or pump the milk.

I pumped at work for almost three months. I had to do it in a bathroom stall, and I was no longer allowed to take a lunch break. And the HR director harassed me constantly about it. People are a-holes when it comes to pumping at work. And formula wasn't an option when she was very small, because she had terrible reflux and would spit it all back up. It would be easier if women got more time off to be with th child in the first place, but no one seems interested in changing that (GASP, socialism!!!).

I don't care what they wear. Does it matter to you that much?

Government-mandated time off to care for newborns should be public policy.

But you bootstrappy types must prefer new mothers be back at the factory as soon as she leaves the hospital.

That wouldn't cut it in California.

California Labor Code § 1030-1033. 1030. Every employer shall provide a reasonable amount of break time to accommodate an employee desiring to express breast milk for the employee's infant child. The break time shall, if possible, run concurrently with any break time already provided to the employee. Break time for an employee that does not run concurrently with the rest time authorized for the employee by the applicable wage order of the Industrial Welfare Commission shall be unpaid. 1031. The employer shall make reasonable efforts to provide the employee with the use of a room or other location, other than a toilet stall, in close proximity to the employee's work area, for the employee to express milk in private. The room or location may include the place where the employee normally works if it otherwise meets the requirements of this section.

I wish there was enough information to get outraged here. She was supposedly deficient on 9 criteria on her last evaluation. Were they directly related to taking extra time to feed/pump? Taking care of a newborn can be time consuming and leave one pretty tired. Is it possible that her performance did fall off after she had the kid?

and

Now she comes and tries to set back women 20 years after so many have fought and sacrificed to bring breastfeeding out into the open. So many feed-ins, so many women who came before sacrificing so that she doesn't HAVE to pump or feed in a closet and this one goes and complains.

I also went back to work in Oct. 2011 after having my first child. I pumped at work because I was physically able to, it was best for my son, and even after accounting for the cost of a pump and milk storage bags, RIDICULOUSLY cheaper (the cost of formula is outrageous). I had a private room and the time to pump, but I also got a healthy amount of shiat from my coworkers, including my dumb
biatch HR exec who once told one of my coworkers that the room I pumped in was "farking disgusting". My nickname was "Marva Maid". I constantly got asked "God, how long are you going to keep doing that?". I know plenty of moms in other cities who got the same treatment and way worse. The attitudes about breast feeding are regressing in an unhealthy and alarming manner, and what kills me is that some of the worst offenders are women.

every town pump that gets knocked up in the bar parking lot has to cop the holier than thou don't question me dammit i'm a mother 'tude. making a personal choice is not license for all others in their world to be put upon. i've seen this shiat in the workplace for years and it grows thin quick. frickin' breeders think the world owes them everything, truly convinced their birth is a miracle (ha!). having to duplicate yourself is the height of selfish arrogance. there are cats & dogs in rescue shelters that need homes you know.

Stuff like that should be done in the privacy of your own home. If she has a newborn then she should've taken maternal leave to give her enough time to do all that mess. I'm sure pretty much everywhere gives you that option.

Besides, where was she doing these "pumping" sessions? In front of everybody? She could've have at least taken it to the bathrooms to do that.

In his/her defense, he/she could be from parts of europe, which actually give a sane amount of maternal leave.

You have been among my favorite tfers ever since you started tfing, girl, but:

"According to Boyle, Dunn practically told her to push the feedings further and further apart."

This is how weaning works. When my kids were infants, it didn't take long at all to wean them from the feedings that were between when I left for work and when I returned home for lunch/after work (I had a very short commute though.)

That said, mama and baby get to determine when it happens.

HOLY farkING shiat. Normally I'll kind of feel superior to the English for the way they phrase things, but what kind of caveman pounded this article out?

"Three months after returning to work, Boyle was given a negative job evolution, and a month later, she was force to quit after being informed that her two-year contract will not be renewed.

In May, Boyle filed a complained with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which gave her the green light to sue the school for wrongful termination and retaliation, failure to accommodate and intentinal infliction of emotional distress."

If you actually RTFA, what they are talking about is the fact that she needs to pump her breasts to get the milk out. It doesn't say that she needed to breast feed all day long. The manager (whoever that is), was trying to tell her how to ween the baby off the breast milk so that her lactation would calm down.

When my wife was breast feeding, both times, it was impossible to keep those things under control. So, I understand this woman's need to relieve the pressure. All she was asking for was 15 minutes to pump them down.

One of these days, humans will begin to remember that we are mammals. And that one simple biological process is real, and needs to be accommodated in real life.
