Good luck with this whole mess. I'm certain that there are many elected officials who will sacrifice their careers and their fortunes to make your dreams of not following your duties as citizens true...

Are those words "Learn to spell secede and secession" ?

I think the greatest lesson here is that the people who are this upset about the election are also the least educated people in the country.

When we speak of the "low information voter" I assume we're not constraining ourselves to political campaigns.

Petitions are currently circulating in all 50 states. Either somebody be Trollin or there are some serious problems afoot in the Republic.

No "states" are petitioning to secede.

I really hope the Obama administration gives these people the go-ahead to proceed. I'd like to see how far some of these loudmouths are willing to take this.

And if one of the slave states actually decides to leave, fark 'em. Let 'em go.

There are idiots in all 50 states. They're not trolling, they're just dumb. With the power of the internet, they can find like-minded idiots who won't make them feel bad about their idiocy, and then you end up with secession petitions on the white house website.

Ooh! I'm a veteran, do my opinions suddenly count? I thought I'd already scored with that free car wash and museum tickets on Monday.

Anyhow, I think these peoples' reactions to an election are stupid, but they have every right to express their grievance with the government without any threats of violence or crime.

However: the question "then what?" keeps popping into my mind. A few of these "spokesmen" have mentioned that they'd enjoy free trade and all sorts of great benefits of statehood once they were independent. No, no, no... sorry. Countries with diplomatic wings, enforceable borders, and legitimate claims to their lands get to make trade deals.

Is it just a fantasy to prohibit equal rights advances over the centuries? To punish liberals for all the havoc caused by the EPA in making our air and water safe? Or is it just an opportunity to deport millions of not-quite-like-minded voters from their own property and homes?

"President Obama's reelection last week, tens of thousands of voters-ignoring what happened the last time around states tried for succession -want their states to be allowed to "peacefully secede" from the U.S. to form their own government."

Yes. the last time they tried to succeed at seceding?

Just because a person is a veteran of our Armed Forces does not make that person intelligent.

Look at John McCain.

To the vets who have been selectively interviewed by a selected media to produce a pre-formed media outrage statement, let's hear from a General.

"When the South raised its sword against the Union's Flag, it was in defense of the Union's Constitution."
Confederate General John B. Gordon

Of course you won't understand that, based on your piteous pubic scrool edication and the approved memes and narratives you've digested with the pablum and Ovaltine.

If you look at the responses for any given state, there are plenty of signers from well outside that state and no doubt there are plenty of "well... bye!" thoughts being expressed.

Am a vet, not looking to seccede but not dead against the idea. Many of the various states have little in common aims and are to extent not helped by the union, as currently composed. Interestingly Puerto Rico just passed a non-binding measure to join the union as a state. A differently composed federal system would work well but in many ways I strongly think that the Federal government has become far to involved in the daily lives of citizens and become to powerful at the expense of both citizens and states.

I like one Veteran's comment "If you think about it that's why vets have been going to war for this country for 200 years, to make sure that if you have to gripe, you can gripe openly about it,"

People are letting off steam. I think these petitions will die a natural death in a few weeks.

The incredible idiocy is that they think their entire state thinks just like they do. I live in Missouri. I did not vote for Mitt, but he won the state. Does that mean I get kicked out if Missouri leaves the Union? If a state becomes a republican country do all the democrats have to leave? How will a state run itself as a country if all the Little People leave? Will unions, which are traditionally Democratic, be abolished? Who will keep the infrastructure running (electricians, carpenters, plumbers, bakers, food service, truckers, etc)? Will they grant temporary visas to migrant farm workers in the south during harvest? Don't people realize that knee jerk reactions like this only make them look stoopid?

That's 7,000 voters that don't have to decide which set of grandparents to go visit for the holidays. Imagine how convenient that would be.

Just as with today's "conservatives", it would appear that General John B. Gordon there was capable of stunning feats of cognitive dissonance. Interesting. Being a General doesn't make one intelligent, either. Trust me on this.

Yep, just like every other fringe group that no exists in the bowels of places like 4chan. Sure, they existed before the internet, but in obscurity. Now they can look around and receive validation because if other people think the way they do then they must have merit, damnit!

Have any of these petitions reached the 25k limit yet? And even if so, 25k/300M = neglible population of nutjobs.

No, because they keep their mouth shut at work and the "people" on FreeRepublic cheer them on. Before the internet, you could only really discuss these things with people near you... and chances are pretty good, unless you only talk to one or two people, somebody will eventually tell you how stupid you're being, and then you'd feel properly ashamed. Now you've got literally hundreds of people, more than you probably talk to in person on a regular basis, telling you how great your stupid ideas are. Why would you stop being stupid?
This isn't a purely republican affliction, mind you... Patient Zero may well have been a 9/11 truther.

You haven't thought through the practicalities of this have you? The cost of defence alone (currently shared across all states) would mean massive tax hikes due to the extraordinary duplication of bureaucracy. Then there's every other farking thing. That's what this means, and that's why these people are just butthurt morons. Having an idealogical view is one thing, implementing it at a practical level is very much another. Many of the states in question receive more from the union than they contribute, these states would be well and truly farked by seccession.

Prediction: when the states seccede, one of them will elect a black president and that will prompt every county in that state to launch their own seccession measures. Ad infinitum, until each household is its own nation state.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to secede.

The feds have taken over most of the rights of the states. The federal government is supposed to be very limited. Now they have their greedy little paws in everything we do.

This isn't a dem or pub thing. Both parties only want to gobble up more money and power. They don't give the first fark about the people.
