Champagne is overrated, and hence, overpriced. Prosecco is where it's at. |

Sudo_Make_Me_A_Sandwich: Champagne is overrated, and hence, overpriced. Prosecco is where it's at. I buy my champagne directly at the producer for 14 euros a bottle, and everybody finds it wonderful. Some Champagne are overrated. |

Meh - anything off the vine in France is over-rated anyway. Give me a good Californian or Washington cab, merlot, or zin. |

Jiro Dreams Of McRibs: Yes, but what about the Merlot? WHAT ABOUT THE MERLOT??? My girlfriend is a wine specialist. We were browsing the wine section at Hy-Vee and overheard a guy on his phone with his wife say, "I'm not seeing the Mare-lot honey are you sure they have it here?". We had a good laugh. |

Oh +1 Subby! HOTY candidate in my book. |

| uttertosh Sudo_Make_Me_A_Sandwich: Champagne is overrated, and hence, overpriced. Prosecco is where it's at. I've said for years to my family and friends: "Whatever you were going spend on champagne, don't. Give me half that, and I'll get us twice as much Cava that tastes just as good, if not better". Now I can double that figure in 2016!! The reason it is so expensive is because the Champagne region is one of the crappiest climates/soil for grape growing in the country. That and middle classes used to love emulating whatever the royals thought was cool. And the royals of the time liked dropping money on the most expensive of shiat to flaunt their opulence. Most non-vintage Champagne is How The Grinch Stole Christmas, imo. Moet&Chandon is not only 4-5X the price of a comparable Cava, it makes your breath smell like poop after a glass, too. |

Try a French sparkling wine that isn't Champagne. ![]() Crémant de Bordeaux for example. |

Jiro Dreams Of McRibs: Try a French sparkling wine that isn't Champagne. [www.mediaite.com image 640x480] Crémant de Bordeaux for example. Basically. Anything called Crémant is Champagne not allowed to be called Champagne. Crémant d'Alsace can be very good also. "Crémant de Limoux" uses the same grapes. |

What I liked about the Cremant de Bordeaux was it actually tasted like wine with bubbles. Very nice with cheese, olives, etc. |
