Just releasing freon into the atmosphere (if you could even get any) would get you in some serious do do.

MIT keeps an online gallery of hacks on campus. Some of them are pretty hilarious.

I get a kick out of the TARDIS that traveled around the country.

If you see something, say something. If this were done today, people would be trampling each other to get out of there. Jeez, just look at the scene in Dark Knight Rises. That's what people would think was happening.

Man am I old. I remember this story like it was yesterday. It made every network's nightly news.
It was hilarious back then and everyone (except Harvard and Yale) praised the pranks ingenuity.

I met a professor who said that he was approached by security at the game and was told "We found this MIT student with a number of D-cell batteries in his jacket" (presumably to power the remote activator) and the prof said he pulled a similar battery out of his pocket and said "All MIT guys carry batteries, think nothing of it!"

From that article: "The device is said to have been some kind of computer circuit board with Play-Doh and wires attached, strapped over her black hoodie."

Idiot. Might as well point a fake gun a cop.

If you read further, it was actually paint, and not Play-Doh.

Why would you take a cop's word for anything? They over-reacted and the girl wasn't even trying to board a plane, she was picking a friend up.

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep

Step out of line, the man come and take you away

I think we were warned. We've been afraid of our own shadows for a decade now.

One major terrorist attack, something countries in the middle east face almost daily, and we've turned into a bunch of frightened castrato/eunuchs (count me out of this population).

Welcome to the U.S.A., land of the soft, home of the uneducated. By land or sea we will cower to boxes, bags, and whatever inert object may have a probability greater than 0.00001% that it might be a bomb. Just like those asinine "doomsday preppers".

In addition, the "non-religious/secular" population that is supposedly the U.S., is now shaiting their collective pants because of the Mayan calendar.

I'm going to start leaving empty boxes in various places. I'll probably get arrested for "inducing panic". Inducing panic via empty boxes. F(cking scared and stupid americans.

If they still want to have some fun, they could lie about the value and risk assessment of derivatives, selling them off for trillions in profit to unsuspecting (or complicit) financial institutions, rushing through the ownership transfers involved or never signing them off to save time, and then watch as the market implodes causing a worldwide depression and institutions scrambling to find the ownership trail, often resorting to illegally creating their own paperwork in order to place the burden on the last sucker in line - the average homeowning American.

/probably wouldn't even be charged with a crime

People with deficient intellectual capabilities tend to demonize those who are more gifted. It's the same reason you see the words "elitist" and "ivory tower" used so often in a derogatory fashion during political rants.

A worse hack was the failed one where they buried (EXPLOSIVE!) primacord under the turf at Yale spelling out MIT. They ran the buried wires from the detonator off field to end behind a dumpster.

The setup was discovered.

At game time all of the MIT students were searched for batteries. The trigger man was found and with the batteries and detained by security. He claimed that all MIT students carried batteries.

He'd for sure go to gMITmo today.

All of you people who think that the article is being paranoid, do you remember the Post-it Note Scandal/Debacle?

I mean, those kids had permission and were still suspended and the janitor was fired over a "prank" that resembled something my Kindergarten teacher used to do to her room on purpose to brighten up the windows...

Everyone I mingle with as well - but maybe both of us are not paying attention to the GENERAL population, which are idiots. I work with people who are extremely intelligent and perhaps you do as well. It insulates one from what the average man thinks and perceives. You know, fear of razorblades in Halloween candy, the embracing of the "terrorism color system" and believing the TSA makes them safer. 8-/
