Eh, there are varying types of GMOs, but when they announced they were going to cross breed salmon with another fish to make them bigger, I ralfed.

Why? Sounds delicious.

Whether it comes from a tree, a salmon, or a pig, every gene is just a sequence of the exact same four nucleotides. We've been modifying the genes of plants and animals in completely artificial (i.e. maladaptive in non-man-made environments) ways for centuries with breeding, and even cross-pollinating different fruits. Ever eaten a pluot? But even if you're using genes from species that couldn't normally mix, there is nothing qualitatively different about the resulting genome.

While there are pitfalls with genetic modification that I dislike, such as Monsanto's crazy intellectual property lawsuits and the paring down of genetic diversity, in principle I have absolutely no problems with GMO products, not even when they do things like stick fish genes into a rice genome.

They don't get enough pre-market testing to ensure that the existing genes and their resultant proteins/enzymes (yes I know enzymes are proteins but it's worth highlighting that some proteins are enzymes) and the introduced genes resulting in their proteins/enzymes don't produce unintended consequences. Some proteins are toxins and some enzymic activity results in the production of toxins. The potential is always there for introduced genes (even from harmless and edible species) to cause chemical reactions within the cells they are introduced into which result in the production of harmful molecules. I'm not anti GMO but I would be far more pro GMO if they had a hell of a lot more pre-market testing before consumers started digging in.

/I do have confidence in long-existing GMOs such as Flavr Savr tomatoes because if there were problems they'd have been discovered by now

I understand the concern, but GMOs are heavily tested before they go out into the market, and often voluntarily (The FDA actually assumes substantial equivalence in most cases, which means that you don't technically need to test except for in cases like Bt, where it does need to be registered with the EPA.). Feed trials, feed studies. There are almost 0 instances where something unexpected crops up. The only instance I can name off the top of my head was an instance where a brazil nut gene set off brazil nut allergies. This was in very, very early trials. And they knew it was a risk. It never even got past the transformation stages.

Most of these transformations are carefully planned, and examined. Can you even imagine what would happen if something bad happened? GMO would go the way of nuclear energy, and that's an entire industry flushed down the can. Science has learned from the problems of thalidomide and tends to err on the side of caution.

An additional issue to consider is the cost to development, especially when it comes to non-subsidized crops. Anything other than soy and corn has to generally get by on minimal funding because there's no agribusiness funding it. For example, I work in Barley (Not GM work, more on the assimilation of wild germplasm for better yield). The most I get is a little bit of support from Annheiser Busch. Barley and wheat are mostly overseen by an academic consortium along with the government. It gets even worse when you move to vegetables. I knew a professor at Cornell who basically worked on five or six different vegetables, just to make sure that the lab could get funded. The likelyhood of him getting enough funding to do a feed trial is near zero.

P.S. I hate Monsanto too.
