NYPD cops caught on cam by "igotya" app trying to access iPhone. That is illegal officers, but we'll give you some time to fabricate a tale. Hmm, maybe you were just trying to turn it off?...yeah, let's go with that

SphericalTime: I'm more enjoying the fact that the police were caught running a red light while the car was impounded.

Tennessee had to enact a law because of things like this. Cops were either racing, and I mean racing - like 100mph in a 45mph road - to calls without lights and sirens, or with lights and no sirens, or just flipping on their lights and running the red light.

It took a girl dying in Chattanooga because of police improperly using their warning equipment to get the law passed. Even now, they don't obey it.

Every now and then, you get incidents like this, where a cop was speeding to a non-emergency call, ran a red-light, and killed a family of three from Senatobia as they pulled through the intersection and had the green. Crash data indicated the officer never even slowed as he approached the intersection, a 30mph Road, and was doing at least 70 on impact with the side of their vehicle.

So this is an interesting unintended consequence of the "big brother" style cameras being installed everywhere. Average citizens have been concerned that the police/government was tracking their every movement...now with small pieces of technology and using the government's own tools against them, the average citizen is able to hold the police/government accountable for their illegal actions in a way that no one ever intended or foresaw.

In Massachusetts a guy was just arraigned on felony wiretapping charges for having his girlfriend record him getting a speeding ticket.  No reason these apps have to be legal if police don't like them.

As much as that sucks, I fear a few more of these cases are going to have to happen before lawmakers realize that technology has reached a point where throwing people in jail for filming/recording their interactions with law enforcement is stupid, and recording is now the norm moving forward.

On one hand, yeah I could see the suspect's side. On the other hand, I can see the shear incompetence of the NYPD leading an attempt to turn the phone off resulting in the tamper app being activated.

As to the scratches on the car; if they towed the car, it could have gotten scratched while it was at the impound lot.

Maybe you guys have never heard about cars with laminated side windows.

You see, normally, most cars have tempered side windows. And on those cars, you would be right. But Mercedes, Lexus and probably other luxury car makers have been using laminated glass in the side windows for many years now. Just like my Dad's 1951 Ford truck.

True, however MB cars have laminated safety glass for rear windows.
This makes them quieter than if they had tempered glass.

oh I learned that fifteen years ago, when I started as a glazier, then got my journeyman certificate in 2010 which gave me an international red-seal certification to install glass anywhere in the world. To be fair though, some side windows can be laminated glass if it's been retrofitted for riot/vandalism protection, or if it has a laminate or thick tint on the inside that would hold exploded tempered glass together. I'm not sure what newer Mercedes uses since it's been years since I did auto glass, much less a Mercedes.

and if you want to be technical, I think Australia uses laminate glass for their rear windows

Last month a guy on another board was trying to cut a piece of tempered glass, rather than fabricate one to size and then have it tempered. People kept feeding him old wive's tales about how he could cut it with string soaked in kerosene and then set on fire and all kinds of other nonsense.
He went through 4 expensive pieces of hard to get glass before he decided to make something out of polycarbonate.
