I'll bet I can hotels in Russia that make that place look luxurious by comparison. Actually I recall a farker here who video taped their stay in a Chinese hotel. As I recall the flood was slanted such that a soda can rolled down it and the bathroom shower didn't have a rise between it and the bathroom floor so the water from the shower was causing the wooden door to rot.

That happened to me in Thailand. The entire bathroom was tile because it was just an open shower attacked to the wall, but the floor sloped towards the door, not the drain. So the bathroom would just fill up with water whenever I showered. I was pretty happy to only be there for two days.

Stayed here in 2008...it was a unique experience...housekeeping may have existed somewhere, but certainly not in our room. At least we got upgraded to a suite. I can see why Sid stabbed Nancy....

At least they're well aware how crap they are. Seems there's a good market in people going for the lowest price who don't care if the hotel is good.

in the 60s / 70s The Thunderbird Motel in Paterson NJ was a flop house in need of its own hearse. rarely did a week pass without a few bodies making the newspapers. i think it was a Heaven's Gate where junkies, hookers, dealers, suicides and unlucky victims went for their final breath.

It had seen better days. We were in a room with mismatched furniture that looked like it had been scrounged from thrift stores or garage sales. There was no art on the walls to distract from the fact that the place really needed a paint job. And ceiling repairs.

Still, it was clean, so I shouldn't complain, in spite of the two (false) fire alarms that went off during our short stay. (I hope it's not still a potential firetrap, I really don't. There are long-term residents there.)

Worst hotel I ever stayed at was called (I think) Capital Hotel or something in Calcutta this last summer.

It was that or sleep on the street and I made the wrong choice. Filthy would have been an improvement.

Calcutta was a pretty disgusting place. How they were able to make the entire city smell like urine is a mystery to me.

India is off the list of travel plans for many decades

Funny, the town I went to college in ma had a hotel like that. And not surprisingly it was also named The Thunderbird.

There's a certain kind of .... machismo, for lack of a better word, among the backpacker set. A lot of what they do is for the experiece, the memories, the bragging rights, or a good story to tell later. "Hey, remember that time we stayed in the world's worst hotel?" you ask your traveling companion as you sit at a table with three people people you just met five minutes ago. "No, really! It was LITERALLY the world's worst hotel!" Everyone has a laugh as they drink beer, and your backpacker cred goes up a notch.

The Days Inn near the Atlanta airport?

*clicks link* Hmm... still sounds better.

As a salesman I have had an opportunity to stay in seaside palaces and urban hellholes, but nothing compares to the night I spent at this place. The hookers were lined up on the road outside the hotel (this was 10 years ago). My partner and I waited for the John's to pay the hourly rates with their dates and we then checked into the rooms the company had reserved for us. We were treated to a night of screaming, fights, sirens, CRAZY laughter and all forms of chaos, no gunfire, thank you for asking. I went to the airport at 4:30 am for the 9am flight.

Try getting a reservation at The Habitat Hotel on E57'th street in Manhattan. Single beds, almost like sleeping on a bunk bed, and communal lavatories. It's a hit with the college kids and backpackers.

But it's cheap and in the center of everything.

You go there if all you're going to do is be out all night and you just want a place to crash.

Be sure to book a year in advance.

Don't know if it's still around, but the motels in Ocean View in Norfolk, Va.
Every weekend some sailor would get mugged, drugged, or catch the latest STD's.
Definitely not a place to be after dark.
That was 20+ years ago.

My mom and I still remember the motel I stayed in for my Ohio vet school interview. The packet had it listed as a Days Inn, which I suppose at one time it was. We rode up at 2am (driving all day) and I was already praying in the parking lot that we had the address wrong. We pulled into a dark parking lot with a blinking, half-broken sign on a sparsely populated road. It looked like a horror movie could be set there. A surprisingly pleasant woman with a broken leg, behind bullet proof glass gave us our room keys. The first room had no lights and when the door creaked open to the dark, silent space we tried the lights once and then quietly backed away. The second room we got had lights but was dingy and depressing and, as we lay in our beds, I noticed that there were two bullet holes in the wall and the wallpaper appeared to have been hastily replaced.

"Mom, I think someone died in here", I said. "I think you're right. Let's just try to go to sleep", she replied, checking the chain on the door a second time.

At 5am we gave up on sleep and checked out.

That was the worst hotel I ever stayed in, but least we didn't get bed bugs.

Worst I've ever been at was a place around mile post 10-14 in Nags Head, NC, right on the shore (the shore road that leads to the outerbanks pier, etc.) I obviously can not recall the name.

My brother, my dad and I stayed there for a night after we went on a two day trip to go fishing. The staff was horrible and the place just smelled like death. Worst part? It was absolutely infested with mosquitoes. We had to sleep with all the blankets on top of us just to have a chance at surviving the night with all of our blood.

The next morning, my brother and I -- being the kids that we were -- got curious about what the door on one of the walls went to (a connecting room) and we realized it was open. We opened it and it lead to a room that had about 40 billion mossies in it. That's where they all were coming from. We ran out of there and probably left half of our crap.

Good times.
/It's still there last time I checked.

FTA: curtains that double as not-so-fresh towels.

That sounds like a place I had a slumlord. The window coverings that he installed when we asked if he could were sheets and what looked like towels with loops. I dried my hands on the window coverings more than once.
