So I should just mail them a check and stay home, then. |

If it's like Chicago, I bet it's a bunch of hicks walking three across on the sidewalks, standing on both sides of the escalator, clogging up the doors of the El and in general making it impossible to get anywhere. |

Saari said that the nation's solitary natural beauty had become too busy to truly enjoy, "because there are thousands of foreigners there, disturbing you in your own country." /Alrighty then, we will just stop coming over and you can see your local economy take a nose dive into the dumpster due to nobody buying shiat. 'All the stores will close down, and you will be left on the beach, sucking dead cold carp because you have no money to buy food. //it could happen. |

According to a survey authored by a University of Iceland researcher, 40 per cent of hikers on the popular Laugavegur hiking trail reported there were too many other travellers on the trail. |

| Gyrfalcon "I doubt we, the artists and musicians, are going to want to be in a place that destroyed all organic cultural value," said Pollock. Well, guess what, sweetcheeks? That's what tourism does to a place. You can be wealthy and watch your culture gradually erode under the influence of tourism and mcdisneyism, or you can be poor and keep your culture intact. There is, unfortunately, no middle ground. At least, nobody's found a way to do it yet. |

Saari about that. I love Icelanders, they are a nation of iconoclasts. They recently changed their official religion from Lutheranism(practiced by most) to Norse Paganism, basically to stick it to the bible thumpers. At least according to our tour guide. Glad to know I was part of the problem. They also told the Euro to take a leap. |
||
| Theaetetus
Was there in August... Beautiful country, wonderful and friendly people. I'm only flying IcelandAir to Europe from now on and insisting on at least a few days layover during at least one leg. |

If your organic culture is mostly skateboarding and graffiti art, then.....ugh. Just ugh. |

I'm only flying IcelandAir to Europe from now on and insisting on at least a few days layover during at least one leg. I was there in July and I completely agree. Same here with a great (and cheap!) Iceland Air expeirence. The business class lounge is worth it too (you can just pay for it by itself, not flying business). Only issue was my flight from DC landed at like 6AM and we couldn't check in the hotel until like 2PM...we were kind of zombies that day. If you do get a flight that gets you in early, just go to the Blue Lagoon or stay at the airport (especially since you can sleep in the lounge) until about an hour before your hotel allows you to check in if you aren't planning on sightseeing. I think I may rent a cabin next time and do some Atlantic Salmon fishing. |

The wife and I did that for three days on a whim - no fee to change the tickets, we got 50 Euro hotel rooms and a rental car for 100 Euro (yes, I am doing the conversion for you) Even socked in with fog and rain it was nice and tiny. |

My mom's side of the family is 100% Icelandic heritage, making me 50% Icelandic. Tallest per capita nation in the world, highest literacy rate in the world, and an impressive list of world champion strong men for such a small country. The one thing I usually leave out when discussing my lineage is that all native Icelanders are related to each other. |

How easy to solve is this problem ??? Just raise the prices for everything touristy, including hotels. If it's stuff locals do to, give them a discount with their driver's license or whatever. Keeps the total amount of money coming in the same, reduces the amount of tourists. |

Friends of ours just got back from Iceland. It's apparently a GREAT country to visit (though currently overrun by tourists like our friends...) I can understand this though. Reykjavik has a population of just over 100K and the entire country has just over 300K so I can see how 1 million tourists a year might make some random Icelander feel like they are slightly overrun. Meanwhile, jsteiner78, I have met a few of your relatives, since I have had a number of friends who are 50% or more Icelandic. |

Its awesome how all other countries are allowed to say they dont want any foreigners there.. Except America. If you say it in America, you're a racist. |

Simple solution: visitors' visas cost $x -- adjust x as needed. They're not in the EU I don't believe, so there should be no problem requiring visas. |

Of course they don't. NOBODY wants me. nobody |

Wasn't there an article recently about Berliners complaining about tourist? You can't be a tourist city and get all upset about visitors. Boston is better with the tourists around, we just need to train them to behave.

The one thing I usually leave out when discussing my lineage is that all native Icelanders are related to each other. Everyone's related to everyone else if you had records that went back far enough. Iceland has a small population and immaculate records that go back about 1000 years, so the job is much simpler. |

Along the main shopping artery, Laugavegur, vintage clothing stores and Icelandic hotdog stands are slowly giving ground to tourist shops peddling puffin dolls and lava rocks. |

I'm sure once the "unwelcome" tourist money stops flowing the creditors who own Iceland's massive debt will accept payment in the only thing Iceland has left: Tears of regret. |

Go to just about anywhere and "act like a tourist" and you will quickly wear out your welcome. This is especially true of people who go on group tours. I am not saying that group tours are necessarily bad, but they are concentrated stereotypical tourist. You are better off doing your own thing and seeing what you want to see, not what some company tells you to see. And above all else, if you are going to a country where you do not speak the language pick up a phrase book and learn a few phrases. They locals will greatly appreciate it. |

Get real Iceland. The country has so many hot springs, lakes and all that ocean around them. Getting rid of a body is pretty much a done deal there. Just liberalize gun ownership and allow all citizens government subsidized basins and cement. Better yet, the US is preparing for a zombie invasion. Just throw the body in a hot spring, sprinkle in some old bay and ship the body to the US as zombie feed. |

[www.ancestor.com image 300x384] Would like a word.. I know right? Every Real American should know that the words inscribed on our Statue of Liberty(even though it was subbed out to France) was meant for white people only. We didn't discriminate at all, even took the poor and some of the sick if they weren't too bad off, but no that wasn't good enough. Everybody showed up to the party, when we had only invited negroes and had went and picked them up Then people unfairly label Real Americans Racists for saying we don't want anybody else from anywhere moving in. In fact we would like for a lot of people to leave, and some of them are white. /One of my few attempts so don't be too hard on me. |

jsteiner78: The one thing I usually leave out when discussing my lineage is that all native Icelanders are related to each other. Half of my family came over on the Mayflower. And later was in the earliest expeditions to settle the Rockies in Colorado. I usually gloss over my inbreeding too. |
