Have you ever wondered why, no matter how stuffed we are, there's always room for dessert?

I assumed it was because I'mma greedy bastard who loves Pumpkin Pie.

Is the science in on that now?

Because the dessert compartment is different from the dinner compartment, of course. That's what my kid always insisted when it was time for pie and he hadn't finished his dinner.

But really--shouldn't you make pie a priority in your life anyway?

A slice of Homemade Lemon Meringue and Pumpkin Pie with real whipped cream and maybe one of those Chocolate Pecan dealies DeaH was talking about the other day. Key Lime can be good too.

I can usually eat it because I don't go for dessert *right* after the meal. Wait about an hour or so - you'll enjoy it more, and you can have a bigger piece.

When I was a kid I would say I was 'full' to avoid eating my veggies (well, the ones I didn't like). But when it was revealed that we have ice cream or Jell-O for dessert, I came up with the explanation that the dessert would be able to slip into the cracks in between the stuff in my "full" stomach. It worked a few times, but in most cases it was 'if you have room for dessert you have room for those last 3 brussel sprouts"

Pies are mostly fruit, and you can make them without adding sugar. Cakes are mostly flour - not eggs and milk, and you have to add a shiatload of sugar. And fat, butter or shortening.

Sure, fruits have a lot of vitamins, but aside from that a pie is basically a load of sugar wrapped in more sugar. Some of the sweeter fruits register 15-20 Brix, which means almost a fifth of their weight is sucrose even without adding extra sugar, and most pies do contain added sugar.

Now, I'm not trying to badmouth fruit or pie -- I love them.
But it's silly to call pie healthy, it will absolutely make you a fatass.

Amen. In my house, Thanksgiving goes:

Appetizers/light stuff in the late morning or noon.
Dinner at 4-5.
Port or sherry right after.
Coffee and pie or cake at 6-ish. Sometimes a

And a turkey sandwich about 7-8.

Of course, we only do one plate - we'd rather enjoy the leftovers, to be honest.

Pie, made the way both of us agree it should be, still fails the sugar test.

Note to pre-made crust users: watch out for trans fats in them. Examples: Pillsbury All-Vegetable Deep-dish crust has 1.5g/svg and the Pillsbury Rolled crust has 0.5g/svg.

Unless your fruit is raw, it has been processed fyi. It's not even like meat where there is some valid argument for cooking it. The fruit that is placed in pies is not a health food. It is sugar coated candy. Sorry! The pie crust is mostly butter for a damned reason. Now if you want junk food, pie is probably healthier than eating the same calories worth of candy bars, which contain preservatives and no semblance of whole fruit, but not by too much because you're still eating junk.

Everyone would be much healthier if they just ate fresh fruit for dessert (including the peel/pulp/major fiber source for the respective fruit and all). Most confections remove the fiber containing portions of the fruit, the most valuable part of the food. Screw vitamins and minerals. Very few first world people are deficient of any of those things. Sadly, most of the ingredients in your meal are probably fortified with random vitamins and minerals.

That's part of the point, but if pie were a regular part of your meals you'd probably be diabetic. On the other hand, the regular consumption of broccoli, or chicken breasts, or eggs doesn't appear to have such adverse effects. To me the idea that a food is "healthy" implies that consuming it with regularity will enhance your health as opposed to deteriorating it.

I've generally agreed with you in this thread, but on this point I would like to think that most people who speak English and have a fundamental science background would understand that food processing encompasses any physical or chemical transformation of food. Where this is most relevant to nutritionists and dietitians is where the processing starts to break down food so substantially that it lowers the metabolic requirements for digestion and makes food too efficiently metabolized (interesting article on how cooking can increase a food's calorie count) or even produce high sugar/insulin spikes. "Processing" carb- heavy foods is a definable problem for diabetics.

Something so benign as peeling an apple is a physical transformation of a healthy food into a slightly less healthy food. Take that peeled and sliced apple, cover it in preservatives, seal it in a wrapper and put it on a Subway shelf for a week and it's even less healthy. It is still better than potato chips, but it is technically processed. Am I calling apple slices at Subway unhealthy? No. People should just have an understanding that convenience food and preservation requires chemical processes (sometimes ones fairly alien ones, like I tend to prefer dried fruit made with lemon over sodium bisulfate) and that often it does degrade the nutritional quality of their food.

I'm not a raw food nut, but I accept that most everything I do to my food is processing and I try to avoid more heavily processed foods. You certainly wont find anything resembling baked goods in the wild, so that's probably why our bodies' only response to them is to just store fat on our asses.
